Hello Smile, I'm after some advice about Weston. I have read that it has had a big drugs problem but i can't find anything recently about this. Could anyone let me know if this is still a big issue or if it has been cleaned up now? Were looking to move to the area and as we have a dc its something that concerns me.

There isnt a large town in England that doesnt have a drugs problem and who is to say that once you move there if it doesnt have one now it will once your dc gets older. assume dc is pre-school hence your concern. seaside towns have other problems - seasonality with everything shut when the visitors go, traffic (nightmare in and around weston on change over day) alcohol - places that arent the in place for teenagers post a levels now might be in a couple of years. if it is a big relocation and you are v worried suggestion you stay there for a few nights during school summer hols and then again in Sept when it is a bit quieter. hope you come to the right decision.

Thanks i know and i know that what some people think is shocking other people dont think is that bad. Were in the north west so it is a big move and yes our dc is 9 months old i know we have some areas with a big drugs problem here and i just know to avoid them so once i know the area better i suppose i will be able to do the same. Thanks for your advice

Taunton, Bridgewater and Western have big drugs issues for their size, although Taunton also has its nice parts and is considered by many as a very nice town.. I lived in Somerset for a while and my parents and family have too in various locations. I do know this because one of my brothers got involved very heavily so we have seen it from that side as well. I am not from Somerset origionally though. Parents lived (just mum now) just down the road from Western in Burnham on sea and have always been very happy there. It is a nice little town.
Now I live in London and we are looking around too at places.
Take a look at schools too even now, as it gives a picture of the standard of education. www.locrating.co.uk is a good website for that.
You can also look at the crime rates for the area.
I wouldn't call any of those towns that large either really.

Them websites are really usefull thankyou very much. Burnham on Sea was another area we were looking at i think its going to be like anywhere isn't it the problem is going to improve the further away from the town centre we go.

Hi Vicki

I moved back to Weston nearly 5 years ago with my daughters, who is now 6 years old.

It's a brilliant place to bring up young kids, with lots to do, particularly if you like doing stuff outdoors that doesn't cost anything - beach, woods, park, quarry. It's also very close to Bristol and the Somerset coutryside.

There are a few drug rehab centres around the town and I think this is where the reputation comes from. I can honestly say we've never had any problems with people who take drugs. I don't go out clubbing or anything so can't comment on what goes on there. We feel safe at any time of the day and any part of the town (we live 7 minute walk from centre)

Although you do get day trippers here in the summer, Weston doesn't suffer from tourist drain in the winter months - the population is somewhere around 90,000 so it's big enough to cope.

Primary schools all pretty good.

I love living here and have made a lot of friends through Weston-super-Mum (google us, join the website and ask the question to loads of local families)
