Getting from Paddington to Richmond

Will be arriving with dd7 and luggage at Paddington mainline. Am told by my Pop that there is work on the direct tube line from there to Richmond. Can anyone reccommend a train or bus route that will be the easiest to navigate?

I'd get the tube. district line (the green one). Richmond is final destination so plenty of time to disembark the other end. Paddington is a pig of a station though, so getting to the tube will be a pain (stairs), and you may have to wait a while for a train.

i think there is work on the district line - have decided to get off at Reading and go straight from there. Thanks though
