Holiday cottage for family of 5 within reach of a Newcastle Metro station or evening buses/trains(Tynemouth?)

Any recommendations for somewhere really nice for a family to spend a week visiting our own family - who unfortunately don't have space to put us up - going to the Olympic footy and messing about visiting the sights and going to the beach? I lived in Newcastle myself yonks ago so have a rough idea what's what, but initial googling didn't turn up anything. Any recommendations gratefully received.

www.visitnortheastengland.com may have some suggestions (havent looked at it myself buts its always advertised on the local tv). i do think you are going to struggle to be that close to newcastle though
