for dd (4yo) and myself, just for one night. We're not actually going to Alton Towers but that would be a good area for us to stop overnight. I thought we might easily find somewhere clean and cheap :) any recommendations?

are you going to spend a day at alton towers?if so (and you don't want the alton towers hotels themselves) consider a b&B in alton or Leek (a nearby market town). there are also several pubs near alton towers that offer B&B.
If you are not going to alton towers, you could try these areas again, and maybe newcastle-under-lyme. I have no idea where you are going to/from so I'm sorry not to be more help.

The holiday inn express in stoke is good.
Also AT hotels have late availability offers on at quiet times, last weekend was £99 per night inc breakfast

we aren't going to Alton Towers... I thought it would be a good stopping area. We will be travelling from Cambridgeshire to Wigan.

Thanks for the HIE recommendation. I'll try that. B&B's sound like a lovely idea as well.

If youre travelling on the motorway i wouldnt bother staying anywhere near alton towers, why do you want to if not going?
Its out of the way and about an hour off the motorway.
If youre going m1 then the village at nottingham is nice, family rooms, pool, nice food.

I agree that Alton towers itself not the best place as the B&B prices will be inflated due to tourist demand.

I personally would chose somewhere that has less significant tourist attraction.

Are you doing M1, A50, M6 to Wigan?

If so the Travelodge at Uttoxeter is on the A50.Other wise if you want something closer to the M6 try the Travelodge at Crewe.
