They vary quite a lot - have you stayed in any good family rooms or especially nice hostels?

There are two I can recommend in Scotland.

Braemar Youth Hostel - run by a family with young kids and lots to do in the local area.
Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel - amazing hostel, clean, well run and again, lots to do in the local area.
Happy travels............

YHA one in Sherwood forest is great - lovely en-suite family rooms and family friendly lounge, lovely food, right opposite Sherwood Forest, and at the start of a mile-long track to the famous oak tree, lots of lovely (free) parks around.
One on Micklegate in York - looks a bit European backpacking studenty (iyswim), buy huge family rooms in the eaves with amazing views of York Minster..made us feel like extras from the rooftop scene in Mary Poppins.
Also check out www.roomfor5.co.uk which lists hotels which sleep larger family groups in a single or interlinking rooms - have stayed in one of them recommended, and for 5 of us, worked out at Hostel prices!
