Scotland to Cornwall in car - where would be a good place to break the journey with an overnight stay?

Anyone familiar with this journey? Wanted to book a travelodge for an overnight stay to break up the journey.... travelodge sale is on just now, but I have NO IDEA where would be a good place to visit enroute. Looking for a nice little town or perhaps somewhere with an attraction for my 6yo and 4yo.

Hope someone can help...

TIA

Depends where in Scotland you're starting from. If you are leaving from Dumfries the answer would be quite different than for if you are leaving from Wick.

Halfway is around Stoke-on-trent, we often did the journey. You could stop somewhere like Shropshire as you will be heading down the M74, M6 and then M5 I guess?

We've done the central belt to cornwall trip and prefer stopping 2/3 of the way down as mentally theres something nice about getting most of the journey under your belt and then a relatively short stage two arriving in Cornwall with time left in the day - so we recommend the Bristol/Somerset area.
