Nice Hotels In York.

DH and I have been married 10 years at the end of Jan and would like to go away for a couple of nights. We were going to go to Whitby, but we are worried about the weather so thought we might go to York as we went there for our honeymoon. Can anyone recommend a nice hotel? City centre would be good!

York doesn't really have any nice hotels. Hotel du vin But not in town centre.

Not not not royal york which I walked out of.

here for the sheer location. Although a plain old chain.

There are lovely ones out of town, but they are between 3 and 15 miles so you might not want that. If you do, then I suggest Aldwark Manor, The Faversham Arms, and Hazelwood Castle.
The Feversham has a really lovely spa and really really great food and is in a lovely village called Helmsley with little shops and tea rooms. Very nice for a romantic mooch. Perfect weekend away in my view!

Not aldwark manor. They run out of wine- food very mediocre- rooms variable. Used to be nice but went downhill when it became a q hotel.

this is supposed to be nice

This is new and looks v v posh

If you want in the city centre, Monkbar Hotel is fine. We've stayed there several times. It's very central, decent rooms although not huge and quite comfortable. Good breakfast!

If you want really lovely/romantic, I'd suggest staying out of town tbh. Depends what you want to do with your time. Faversham Arms is lovely.

Christmastreedelivery · 14/12/2010 23:22

Awww. You may well be right Simbacatlives*, we had our wedding reception there just before the change [or just after it] and it was brilliant. So I may be deluded. Nice enough pool though.

Faversham Arms, all the way Xmas Smile

I have eaten at the grange it was nice.

I have stayed in the monk bar- the room was very odd-The bathroom was metal lined and up a staircase. The hotel was not the cleanest and the food was very mediocre. Actually been to a meeting there as well and the food was poor that day.

Christmastreedelivery · 14/12/2010 23:48

Metal lined bathroom......surely a sect or some sort of fetish?

Simbacatlives · 14/12/2010 23:59

Well you went up a spiral staircase from the small room. Then there was a big jacuzzi bath thing- not a nice one. The ceiling and the walls were riveted metal- very low ceiling- Painted white and floor seemed slightly sloping. It was like the hull of an old barge.

I spent the there and went up to bathroom only twice when as it wasn't very nice or very easy to get to.

Thank you all. Think I will look at The Grange and Faversham Arms in a bit more detail. Decisions Decisions.

Yes, perhaps not Monkbar after all! Hope you find somewhere nice OP.

The Churchill on Bootham is very lovely (we had our wedding reception there). Also the Cedar Court Hotel is the new 5* and has excellent reviews.

RachelHRD · 27/12/2010 22:11

We have stayed here and it is lovely with a nice restaurant, great breakfast and it's just opposite the Minster.

Armi · 01/01/2011 12:00

I can recommend Hotel du Vin. It's only a short walk from the city centre and is lovely. We spent our wedding night there and have been back several times since. If you're after a decent restaurant, try The Blue Bicycle.

Mytholmroyd · 01/01/2011 20:36

What about the Judges Lodgings? No 3 out of 46 on tripadvisor - I have several friends who have stayed there and liked it.

Also on Walmgate near the Blue Bicycle is Melton's Too and a Loch Fyne. Can recommend the Hairy Fig deli/tearoom too!
