GoStudent - from an ex-tutor

Dear All,

Following another post I placed in a Mumsnet thread which mentioned GoStudent, I thought that some of you might be interested in having more information before you make any choices about tutoring for your child.

I have been a tutor on GoStudent for just over a year. This company is manned almost entirely a bunch of salesmen and entrepreneurs (not educational experts.) To be clear, the tutors are NOT employed by GoStudent. We are regarded as "freelancers" or something woolly, to allow GS to avoid paying a fair wage, or providing any benefits whatsoever.

I could type a whole essay here, but in short:

Fees you pay, and what the tutor gets
Your 30 quid for just 50 minutes? As low as just 12 of this goes to your tutor. GoStudent take around 60% of the fee. Given that these rates paid to tutors have just gone down even further, along with the abolition of basically all achievable bonuses in the last six months, means that you have a wide choice of underpaid, undervalued and VERY unhappy tutors on board. The tutors have requested meetings with management about pay, and this has been rejected out of hand by the company. The pay has not gone up (even for inflation) for over two years.

Matching your child to a tutor
They claim to do this, but do not. Requests from parents for a tutor are simply passed around WhatsApp boards for the most part, with the "Programme Managers" hoping to find anyone at all to accept the student. Anyone, it seems, will do. The "Programme Managers" are all on commission, and don't seem to care a jot (with certain exceptions.) There seem to be no educational experts left within the company, many of the PMs don't even know the names of the teaching qualifications in the UK.

Sales and parents' contracts
GS will attempt to pressure you into a contract for a minimum of six months. What they will press for the hardest is a three-YEAR one. This cannot be cancelled, and even when it expires, it turns into a three-month rolling contract from there on. This means that you'll still need to give three months' notice, even after your child has left school and no longer needs it. On the very few grounds that they allow you to cancel a contract early, they will demand personal information such as your payslips, proof of unemployment and the like.

Trial lessons, and the tutor you get
You may well get a brilliant tutor for your trial lesson, and you are convinced to join the company as a result. But they very often then deliberately allocate you to a different tutor (this never used to happen) who is on a cheaper pay-scale, despite your first tutor being still available. You won't get a choice over this.

Pausing a contract
Yes you can... but it simply adds those months onto the end of your contract.

Your lesson credits
These have to have been booked by the next month's renewal date, or you will lose them. No rolling over credits at GoStudent.

Customer Service
Appalling. There's nothing more to be said. Once they have your money, you better expect no calls back if you have a problem.

The Platform
For the most part, doesn't work. They have their own classroom called "GoClass" (that replaced Zoom) which constantly has bugs. Video not working, audio not working, interactive digital whiteboards not working, and they are completely incompatible with Apple devices.

The Communications, Tutor and Student
They have, once again, their own software (that replaced WhatsApp) for this called GoChat. Or "NoChat" as the tutors have dubbed it, because messages often never get through. As a result, lessons get missed, and communications are lost.

Safeguarding
The less said about this the better, or I may get into hot water. Ask them if they check the tutors' DBS certificates annually, for example.

Finally, sackings.
This company is as vindictive as hell towards anyone speaking out publicly, or "rocking the boat" over issues such as pay from within. I have been summarily sacked this week (along with five others) for joining the protest against the company changing the rules over trial sessions and pay at just six days' notice for the tutors (they now get nothing for these, and are expected to act as "Salesmen" to get the student to take out a contract.) I had the temerity to send "poo emojis" on the internal message boards at such announcements, and was sacked with immediate effect by phone. Not only that, it was demanded that I do not speak to any students, parents or fellow tutors following my dismissal. They must be joking.

Please everybody, there are many platforms. Better platforms. More reliable platforms. Cheaper platforms. Go elsewhere.

Best Wishes, and thank you for reading,

An ex-GS tutor, who is now VERY happy indeed to do my tuition privately, not through this bunch of sharks.

signed up with gostudent in 2021 september and to start with the contract bit was hidden from me and when i wanted to pull out they told me about a 2 year contract which I patiently ran it out with agony. The contract ended in December 2023 and the last subscription was paid in JANUARY 2024. Exactly after a year they went back to my account and took out £91.60 for a month subscription (that was December 16th 2024 )and they still plan to take another money on the 15th of January 2025. For 11 months no money was taken from my account ofcourse because the 24-month contract had expired, and I sent them numerous emails that i didnt wish to renew my contract.
Gostudent is entirely a fraud . They saved my card details and went back in there 11 monhts after my contract ended to take money from my account.
No parent should have anything to do with them and thats a fact

crnewmalden · 02/01/2025 12:21

I hope that’s the end of it for you. The whole contract thing must be illegal but they rely on people not having the means to challenge them. The education ombudsman doesn’t cover them so I am at a loss how to hold them to account. If any one has any suggestions or success let me know.

They are a con, had terrifble trouble with them. Can I suggest that you contact Action Fraud to report.

catladies · 27/08/2025 14:16

I’m sorry you had such a rough time with them...I can see why you’d be frustrated, especially if you were expecting more support as a tutor.

Our experience on the parent side has been pretty different, so I thought I’d share in case it’s useful for anyone weighing things up. We started with GoStudent for my DS in Year 10, mostly for maths, and we were matched with a tutor we met first in a trial. She’s been brilliant and very patient, explains things clearly, and my son’s grades (and confidence) have really improved. We’ve had the same tutor ever since, so no swapping around.

I know contracts can feel a bit rigid, but we went for a shorter plan at the start to make sure it was the right fit, and that worked well for us. We also found the online classroom fine (not perfect, but no major hiccups).

I guess like with any tutoring setup, it can come down to the particular tutor and the arrangement you go for.

Hi TommyAbroad

My son tutored for this company a few years ago, and was quite happy with it. He was aware he didn't earn very much compared to some other tutors, but the students would just be assigned to him without him having to look for them. He found it quite convenient.

I therefore suggested this to my daugher to do the same. She is a recent graduate struggling to find a graduate job and I thought this was a good idea "to have something to do" .
She has just done 4 trial lessons and has 4 more lined up. She only just now found out she wouln't get paid for any of these lessons. She can't cancel them as she get's a £10/lesson fine.

Not sure what to advise her. Not sure what the chances are for her to get a more "permanent" student. I also hope she is not stuck with a long term contract...

TommyAbroad · 14/10/2025 19:13

Hi Tutoringmum,
I'll try and message you in more detail tomorrow, I only just finished my evening's lessons myself. Don't worry about your daughter being in a contract though - GS don't give contracts to tutors. It's a "gig economy" job. She can stop any time.
TA.

Thanks, that's a relief.
We had a chat with her brother as well.
She has decided to pull out. She did a lesson this evening as she didn't want to cancel on such short notice as didn't feel it was fair.

However we thought that even if she gets some long term pupils, what's going to stop GS from also giving her some trial pupils.

Shame, as mentioned, her brother a few years ago was happy with the whole setup .

TommyAbroad · 21/10/2025 15:54

Latest.

GoStudent are, it would seem, essentially slashing all tutor wages from 16 Quid for the "best paid" tutors, if you can call it that... to 12 Quid or 13 Quid depending on the subject. This is outrageous, and with no consultation. Replaced with a bunch of unachievable "bonuses", which can also be lost again unless you continue to teach huge numbers of lessons and unpaid trials.

Give some thought to the quality of tutor you are likely to get for those rates.

... because just about every tutor I know on there is now leaving.

This is interesting and very upsetting to see exactly what I thought Gostudent is a complete sham. I had a great trial session but then was badgered to sign up which I did. I missed one session as there was no humans available to cancel ahead of time. I was told by the sales team member that it was ok and I could have a double session the following week. I was not sure how to book this and asked if they could do this for me until has the time to check out the site but was ignored for two weeks. I tried myself to find out the allocated tutor was not available for weeks. I asked for a refund due as we had no lessons, again ignored. When the sales person Guliad got back to me via email he stated that he was too busy with other parents to speak with me. The only person with any customer service skills was an Ai bot that could not provide the links for me to cancel. I informed Guliad on numerous occasions that I no longer want to continue with the sessions, this was ignored.
When I eventually found how to cancel the membership subscription myself two weeks later attempts were made to my bank account and told I owe a new month of fees. Basically now seeing this it is clear who and what they are and I strongly believe serious action needs to be taken. Thank you for taking the time to report all the incidents here. It is quite helpful.

Oh wow, as if your thread was timed especially for me as I've just spent a couple of hours pondering my future in teaching.

Thank you for warning us about Go Student, @TommyAbroad , as I nearly signed up as a tutor, but glad I didn't now.

My job at college is just fine, and I enjoy it, but the department itself has become an utterly toxic environment, with at least two members of staff off every day for the past month of so. I don't think I can give up the day job just yet, but on the other hand, I am starting to get paranoid about job security.

Do you do mainly online tutoring or in person? I have a bit of experience of in person tutoring but really want to do online to cast my net a bit further.

TommyAbroad · 15/01/2026 11:38

The final straw may have been reached for tutors.

GoStudent have now breached their own Terms and Conditions, and have not paid their tutors on time. The pay "window" is the 8th-14th, and they are claiming that there are "technical difficulties", without defining what those actually are.

There has been little or no communication with tutors about this, and none of them know when (or even IF) they will be paid. Six weeks of payments have now built up. Tutors have bills to pay.

Tutors are now refusing to take lessons until payment has been made.

Steer clear. This company is going under.
