GoStudent - from an ex-tutor

Dear All,

Following another post I placed in a Mumsnet thread which mentioned GoStudent, I thought that some of you might be interested in having more information before you make any choices about tutoring for your child.

I have been a tutor on GoStudent for just over a year. This company is manned almost entirely a bunch of salesmen and entrepreneurs (not educational experts.) To be clear, the tutors are NOT employed by GoStudent. We are regarded as "freelancers" or something woolly, to allow GS to avoid paying a fair wage, or providing any benefits whatsoever.

I could type a whole essay here, but in short:

Fees you pay, and what the tutor gets
Your 30 quid for just 50 minutes? As low as just 12 of this goes to your tutor. GoStudent take around 60% of the fee. Given that these rates paid to tutors have just gone down even further, along with the abolition of basically all achievable bonuses in the last six months, means that you have a wide choice of underpaid, undervalued and VERY unhappy tutors on board. The tutors have requested meetings with management about pay, and this has been rejected out of hand by the company. The pay has not gone up (even for inflation) for over two years.

Matching your child to a tutor
They claim to do this, but do not. Requests from parents for a tutor are simply passed around WhatsApp boards for the most part, with the "Programme Managers" hoping to find anyone at all to accept the student. Anyone, it seems, will do. The "Programme Managers" are all on commission, and don't seem to care a jot (with certain exceptions.) There seem to be no educational experts left within the company, many of the PMs don't even know the names of the teaching qualifications in the UK.

Sales and parents' contracts
GS will attempt to pressure you into a contract for a minimum of six months. What they will press for the hardest is a three-YEAR one. This cannot be cancelled, and even when it expires, it turns into a three-month rolling contract from there on. This means that you'll still need to give three months' notice, even after your child has left school and no longer needs it. On the very few grounds that they allow you to cancel a contract early, they will demand personal information such as your payslips, proof of unemployment and the like.

Trial lessons, and the tutor you get
You may well get a brilliant tutor for your trial lesson, and you are convinced to join the company as a result. But they very often then deliberately allocate you to a different tutor (this never used to happen) who is on a cheaper pay-scale, despite your first tutor being still available. You won't get a choice over this.

Pausing a contract
Yes you can... but it simply adds those months onto the end of your contract.

Your lesson credits
These have to have been booked by the next month's renewal date, or you will lose them. No rolling over credits at GoStudent.

Customer Service
Appalling. There's nothing more to be said. Once they have your money, you better expect no calls back if you have a problem.

The Platform
For the most part, doesn't work. They have their own classroom called "GoClass" (that replaced Zoom) which constantly has bugs. Video not working, audio not working, interactive digital whiteboards not working, and they are completely incompatible with Apple devices.

The Communications, Tutor and Student
They have, once again, their own software (that replaced WhatsApp) for this called GoChat. Or "NoChat" as the tutors have dubbed it, because messages often never get through. As a result, lessons get missed, and communications are lost.

Safeguarding
The less said about this the better, or I may get into hot water. Ask them if they check the tutors' DBS certificates annually, for example.

Finally, sackings.
This company is as vindictive as hell towards anyone speaking out publicly, or "rocking the boat" over issues such as pay from within. I have been summarily sacked this week (along with five others) for joining the protest against the company changing the rules over trial sessions and pay at just six days' notice for the tutors (they now get nothing for these, and are expected to act as "Salesmen" to get the student to take out a contract.) I had the temerity to send "poo emojis" on the internal message boards at such announcements, and was sacked with immediate effect by phone. Not only that, it was demanded that I do not speak to any students, parents or fellow tutors following my dismissal. They must be joking.

Please everybody, there are many platforms. Better platforms. More reliable platforms. Cheaper platforms. Go elsewhere.

Best Wishes, and thank you for reading,

An ex-GS tutor, who is now VERY happy indeed to do my tuition privately, not through this bunch of sharks.

Avoid Avoid Avoid. They're truly awful.

tensmumllaf · 03/03/2024 08:34

They’ve still not contacted me about coming out of my contract.

lots of new negative reviews on trust pilot now too.

I’ve still not heard anything from them so I’ve cancelled my DDebit today in the hope that makes them contact me. I can’t believe they’re allowed to operate in the way they do.

Relley86 · 19/03/2024 13:10

Wow! I am so glad I found this post. I had a call back from them yesterday and although the person I spoke to seemed to have a good understanding of my daughters needs, something just put me off. I think especially when I said £39 was too expensive for me, as the lesson is online and he then suddenly found a cheaper package at around £30.
My dd has a trial session this evening, but after reading thess comments, I will not be signing up.

Abc123me2u · 19/03/2024 18:01

Hello,

Update.

I emailed mumsnet about what appears to be a misleading endorsement on here and GoStudent. They have replied to say its been passed to a team to review this.

I wonder how many are stuck with a contract with a lack of contact or action. How many think it's just them, that they are wrong when UK laws dont seem to be being used on entering a financial agreement? I feel I had a luck escape but couldnt just leave it, it didn't feel right.

Good luck to all who are stuck with them.

tensmumllaf · 26/04/2024 06:49

An update - at last they did get around to cancelling my contract (I suspect because I kept adding negative reviews on Trustpilot).

But now they owe me £220 and despite them saying they’ve processed the amount it’s not been received. I’ve emailed them for proof so I can ask my bank to investigate but now they’ve gone silent again.

its such a slog with this company. So pleased I’ve managed to terminate the contract. Again to anyone thinking of joining avoid or at least make sure you’re not tied into a contract they make it really difficult to extract yourself from (and if you’re happy to deal with a company where it’s literally impossible to have a conversation with their customer service.)

molly5678 · 03/05/2024 08:00

good morning
I am having the same issue with the company, I’ve tried to cancel my subscription as my daughter finishes school next month but they have responded to say I’m in a ‘binding’ contract until 21st August. I’ve asked for a copy of this ‘binding’ contract.
has anyone has a resolution with this awful company?
thanks in advance

tensmumllaf · 03/05/2024 08:05

@molly5678 - they did exactly the same thing with me and initially said I would need to be with them for another year. I think what worked for me was continually writing bad reviews on Trust Pilot and being really persistent/ annoying about contacting them. I also threatened legal action (thankfully it didn’t come to that).

Good luck.

tensmumllaf · 03/05/2024 08:06

And yes they are an awful company.

Does mumsnet still endorse them?

molly5678 · 03/05/2024 09:07

thanks so much for your response
they take the payment from my bank on a monthly basis so I am going to call the bank and put a block on them taking any more.
I’ve asked them for a copy of my contract which I’m doubtful they can supply seen as I didn’t sign one!

YellowSunRays · 03/05/2024 09:24

I've just seen this thread and read the comments.
We signed up to GoStudent after a Mumsnet free trial.
Obviously we got lucky as DS was allocated a fantastic tutor who was really dedicated and definitely helped him to get a 7 in maths and 8 in physics GCSE.
Never had any issues with the platform.
Did think it was quite expensive but DS wanted online not F2F tuition.
The contract would have run beyond DS's exams so they let us pay in advance for final two months and tutor was available to cram in the sessions before and around exams.
Looks like we were just very lucky - and maybe things have changed as we left them last June time.
I really hope DS's tutor has not been badly treated though - and I do agree that the sales people were very pushy.

tensmumllaf · 03/05/2024 09:57

@YellowSunRays - our tutor was great but she was one of many so we never had any consistency. TBH I don't think they're treated terribly well either, one of the tutors hinted quite strongly at that (and also OP obvs).

molly5678 · 03/05/2024 10:33

Yes agree, the tutor herself is brilliant and has really helped my daughter improve in maths and science.
The company however seem to be making it up as they go along.
yesterday they told me that my last payment would be 21st Aug and now they have sent me a document that I have never had sight of before today saying the end date is 21st July
i have asked for their recording of my ‘verbal agreement’ with their (pushy) sales rep and evidence of when this ‘agreement’ document was sent to me.

Exactly what they did with me. As I said public bad reviews and emailing them most days were what worked in the end. Of course it then took another month to get a refund from them.

Good luck 😊

Upsidedownlife · 04/05/2024 06:12

I’ve reported this thread to mumsnet to have a look at their endorsement of this company, I was looking at tutoring for my daughter but definitely not with this company now!!

tensmumllaf · 04/05/2024 07:47

@Upsidedownlife i agree. The amount of bad reviews they’ve now got is really enough for Mumsnet to at least review their endorsement.

TommyAbroad · 04/05/2024 09:49

Dear All,

Can I just say how delighted I am (truly) that this thread is as busy as it is, and that people are sharing so many generally bad experiences they have had to endure with GoStudent. If this conversation helps some people on MumsNet to avoid being locked into a contract (on a platform that barely works in any case) until their child is in their late 30s, that that's great!

"TommyAbroad."

artdevivre · 04/05/2024 10:06

And so it happened to us as well :-( Signed up a couple of months ago. Tutor was OK, not great to be honest, but we carried on due to the contract. Now its been 3 weeks without classes, they just disappeared, the tutor is not at the day/time agreed and nobody takes our call. I had to cancel my card as new payment is due today. Awful experience.

RachelGreensHair · 04/05/2024 13:18

We had an awful experience with them, after signing up because of MN endorsement.
They'd take money out but tutor wouldn't turn up for lessons. We went around the houses getting no response but they were still taking money out of my account. I posted a review on trust pilot and they someone had time to respond to that but not my phonecalls and emails...It was a pain cancelling the DD cos my bank said I had to speak to the company to cancel at their end. After much perseverance the bank cancelled it. I then asked for a refund on the money taken from my account. The company was insistence they'd delivered the service I'd paid for. Bank said I couldn't be refunded unless I could prove I hadn't received the service I paid for... how can I prove my DD didn't receive tuition? Again, it was interesting they could reply to communication from the bank but not me. I did tell MN about my experience and got a sympathetic email so am disappointed to see they're still endorsing the company.

RachelGreensHair · 04/05/2024 13:19

Should add that I lost alot pf money and I blame mumsnet for that as much as Go Student.

TommyAbroad · 04/05/2024 15:25

Sadly, this is all the typical GS way of operating. Take your money, claim you signed a phantom contract for 200 years, then become uncontactable.

OP posts:
tensmumllaf · 04/05/2024 16:23

It’s so shocking they’re able to get away with it. Something should be done. I really don’t know what to suggest to make that happen but as others have said Mumsnet should at least look into them a bit more before continuing with their endorsement, it certainly it instrumental in why I signed up with GS.

molly5678 · 12/05/2024 22:13

just an update on where I am now with this awful company
I asked them to supply me with the time and date that this random agreement document they’ve come up with was sent to me at the time of me signing up, I’ve also asked for the the recording of the phone call where they claim I agreed to lessons that would go into August (my daughter finishes school next month)
radio silence so I’m going to have to cancel my bank card to stop them taking further payments
