Hi, I’m looking for advice on how to find a tutor , there are so many dodgy websites out there one of which I encountered today .
Can anyone recommend a good reputable agency please ? We’re in London

What makes a website "dodgy"?
Do you mean experience/qualifications of tutors, paying for contact details or charging commission for lessons or something else?
My suggestion would be to look for a company that's registered with the Tutors Association.
Tutor Extra tutorextra.co.uk are relatively new but don't charge parents commission or make them pay to obtain contact details.
First tutors are good and clearly label whether tutors are qualified but you need to pay for contact details. The Tutor website also runs on a similar model. Once you have paid for the contact details you pay the tutor directly.

Thanks for your reply , when I say dodgy is that I phoned a London agency that I had problems getting through to eventually I got through the ladies English wasn’t good & she was overseas she claimed that I had an Acct with them but it had been closed this isn’t true . She then said that someone would phone me back , I never had a call back this doesn’t give me much confidence,
Thankyou again for the info it’s very helpful

Ds has an online tutor from Tutorful.

Mytutor online was great for us. Dd was caught up in the a level fiasco during the early days of covid. "Awarded" a C , needed an A. Had 2 months, twice a week for an hour each time, online, got the grade.

They are generally students in 3rd year at uni with stellar results themselves. Ours was a woman with 5 A levels at A* studying at Imperial in the subject Dd needed. £35 an hour. Money well spent.

I found a really good one for another subject on a website called TutorHunt. The website was awful though. I paid him through it for a few weeks and then went privately. He claimed to be a recently retired ex-head of department in a local school - and I was able to confirm this online and by googling, also checking with friends whose kids had been at the school.

I would definitely look for an actual teacher, working or recently retired, rather than someone who simply has qualifications in the subject. A lot of doing well at GCSE and A Level is knowing the spec and how to answer the questions / what they are looking for.

if you have any friends who work in local schools it might be worth asking them if they have colleagues who might be interested in private tutoring. Many teachers do a bit out of hours.

It is now against Tutorhunt's terms and conditions to do what you suggested.
