Looking a a tutor to help Y13 DS with his A level English.

It's proving hard to find someone. Would a tutor who previously taught in the Middle East be wise?

TIA

If they've previously taught the curriculum your DS is sitting then I'd have no real concerns. Otherwise if it's impossible to find someone else then give the tutor a few sessions and see if DS finds it helpful. I've worked with some great ME teachers and a few duff ones too so there's no hard and fast rule.

@finished31 Hi, I'm a tutor looking for work in Manchester. I have an A* in English Literature A level, and a 1st class degree in English Literature from Cambridge University (can share proof of these if you need) and have a DBS check. Happy to help with all sorts English related - ideas, rethinking through texts in ways which might be different from what he's getting in lessons, essay structure, university / personal statement help - what specifically are you looking for? I'm also diagnosed with ADHD and received special mentoring in both school and university because of this. Even if your son doesn't have ADHD or another specific learning disability, I've found that the pedagogical skills I've learnt through these mentors are really transferable to helping anyone struggling with the standard way they are being in taught in school. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi...is he doing Literature or Language A level?

Where are you based? You do need to find a specialist teacher who knows the specification well. Happy if you want to pm me to make suggestions as I know a lot about this area but may not be able to suggest names depending on where you are based. Would need more info about the specification, his target grades, his texts and so on. A generic English teacher or someone who knows the subject but not the spec and its requirements may hinder rather than help, depending on the issues.
