Sand Pit hygiene

Hi we bought a sandpit for our four year old at the end of last summer. It is one of those wooden ones with a loose weed preventer fabric base. I just opened it up to find slugs and snails on the top, plus a bit of the stagnant water on the top cover went inside and was absorbed by the sand

All of the sand is wet leading to me to think it has got wet from beneath by rainwater etc all winter.

Do I change the sand at great effort? take out the old and buy new (I think it was ten bags from argos in and out)

Or do i let it dry in the sun and top it up

Can children get sick from unhygienic sand play? or is there no such thing - just like playing in the dirt?

Thanks for advice. Can't find anything on the internet about sand pit maintenance.

Cheers, JenJam
