Playmobile vs Lego City

It's ds1's birthday in a couple of weeks and he's asked for both Playmobile and Lego City bits. We'd only rather buy him one or the other.

Does anyone have a recommendation or opinion on which one is best? Any thoughts gratefully received, tia

We have them both adn use them interchangably - together a lot of the time.

If it was one or the other I'd go for lego as its more versatile.

Personally- Lego every time.

Lego's so versatile, it can make what it's supposed to make or be taken to bits and made into something else.

My Ds has a huge amount of Lego, he's just 6 and just properly getting into it, and building things himself. The majority of the lego we own was mine (I'm 37) or my Db's .

Ds does have some Playmobil, but it's jsut what it is, and although it lasts it doesn't spur childrens imaginations as much as Lego can.

I hate playmobil.. I have an almost 5 year old and spend hours looking for bits that are 1mm square

Lego doesnt invoke the same level of annoyance

Lego it is then, thanks

We have both.
Lego is more versatile.
Playmobil is more robust for actually playing with. Especially vehicles.

What age is appropriate for both/either?

Am wondering about getting a gift for my 7 year old nephew, and want to know which is best. Don't want too simple or too complicated.....

CremeDeMenthe · 01/01/2010 15:54

I'd say Lego is a safer bet for your nephew, because it can be built and/or played with. My DSs are a similar age and are really into Lego at the moment - lots of themes to choose from - Star Wars, Power Miners, Pirates, Lego City etc.

Do you think they grow out of Playmobil quicker than Lego?

I'd say so. Lego can get more complex, if that's what they want. eg my 8yo is into building with gears and motors.

tillyfernackerpants · 02/01/2010 08:03

Ok, thanks, will definitely go for Lego

Depends whether they enjoy the building part or the playing with it part the most. Lego offers more for building, especially as you can take it apart and make something else with it. But Playmobil is far mor robust, and doesn't keep falling apart when you play with it.

Ds (aged 9) has both, and plays with both. He enjoys putting the Lego together and making it into different things, but he plays far more with the Playmobil on a daily basis. I woud say Playmobil is by far his most played-with toy, although he does have quite a lot of it!
