We chose toys that could be added to so Duplo, HappyLands, Brio type toys.

It made it much easier to be able to give others ideas for gifts too. They lasted years and family continued to add at Christmas and other birthdays. The parts of such a set also ranged in price to appropriate to all.

We also bought a wooden ride on toy, with an open back, as one of my DC’s loved packing and moving things. It was stable enough for him to use to walk and then ride as he developed.

I also agree about Duplo toy set, it'll be the main idea for the next several years for friends and family
You can also plan a photo shoot and then make a slideshow with thede pictures or even a photo calendar. It won't be an immediate gift, but looking at these photos years later would be very heartwarming for both you and your DS.
