Mumsnet I need help. My son is turning 6 and is really into the way toys work. Not robotics, or Lego, but the way they actually move. One of his favourite things to do is flap the wings of an enforced paper ‘bird’ we made two christmases ago. I’m looking for toy-making kits. Like basic structural items like ball and socket joints, balsa wood bits, pipe cleaners, straws?? I’m pretty crafty but I thought there might be an actual kit, for capable pre-teens and smaller kids. He loves how birds wings work, but any toys we buy don’t flap right, or their wings don’t fold away again. We have bought A LOT over the years and nothing is as good as the paper one. I’m really hoping I’m not the first mum to have this issue, and that some very clever mum whose LO is detail-oriented and so particular it makes you a little bit proud, but mainly demented and left feeling quite deflated with yet another almost-right birthday present.
