Present ideas for 6 year old

Hi all. I'm starting to think about suitable presents for Christmas and birthday (in January) for my almost 6 year old son. We've decided on a new bike for his birthday but I'm need of ideas for smaller gifts for Christmas. He's great at imaginative play but also very interested in engineering and science. We're planning on some lego to add to his growing collection but otherwise a bit stuck.

Just to add, I'm on a bit of a budget but would prefer toys with a bit of longevity.

At that age, my DS was just starting to get into Knex and also loved this construction kit. His cousin had some Geomag which he used to covert!
Gravitrax is brilliant, but my DS probably would have been a bit too young when he was 6. I’ve seen that there’s something similar called vTech marble rush.
Other toys he loved/loves are Light Brite and his Boxer robot.
