Ride on/trike/smart trike for 1 year old

Hi all . Does anyone have any recommendations for my soon to be 1 year old. I want to get him either a trike or ride in toy like a wheely bug or something. Does anyone have any little ones who enjoyed their wheeled toys any advice on what to get? I want him to get some decent use out of whatever we get him and not grow out of it too quickly.

Many thanks

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for trike recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best trikes and best ride-ons pages with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find them useful.

We got a little tikes trike for my one year old. The type with a handle, so we can push/steer but it adapts so he can ride it himself when he’s big enough.

It’s done so much mileage already! He prefers it to the pram, it’s been through countryside, beaches, miles and miles on the road - we love it. We bought a little cyclists bell for the handlebars too

My 1 year old (is very tall! So may find it easier than average height 1 year olds!) manages well on a scuttle bug, and it lasted my older kids till they were about 3 years old, so a good couple of years per child. Then they were onto 2 wheels.

Folds down small, is robust, not heavy for them to push or me to carry... I'd recommend it!

We got a SmarTrike thing but our experience was horrendous.

We got it brand new. I used it once and it was horrific, the steering kept locking on so I would push it along and the fucking thing would veer off course erratically. I don't know what happened to make this happen, it worked OK for approx half a mile so we were some way away before it went Pete Tong.

I nearly drove my daughter into traffic several times, if DD hadn't been strapped in I'd have chucked the thing in front of a car. I hate the fucking thing and we keep it in the spare garage as she still liked playing with it in the garden. We still call it 'that awful green thing'.

We have tried to fix it, and sort out errors but whatever we do (DS now using it) it works for a short time then jams on again. So so so so frustrating.

I'd recommend any other brand! (some friends also have this and I know theirs are OK... But...)

Great idea Buttercupmoon! A trike is perfect for a 1 year old! They are just developing their fine motor skills and the freedom that a trike brings can really help to promote their independence. There's loads of products out there, but as you've eluded to, you probably want something that is going to last. This really means that you need something that can grow as you child does, something you can modify and adjust as they get bigger. I'd definitely recommend this:

Technically, its not quite a trike, but it functions in the same way. It's fully adjustable should last all the way up until they are 3 years old! Definitely worth a look.

Cheers!
