Chess Set for Christmas

Sallythedog · 20/11/2017 06:28

I'm looking to buy my dgs a chess set. The decent ones seem very expensive, but the website OfficialStaunton is currently showing a 25% discount for Black Friday (until the end of November, so quite a long day). I'm wondering if anybody has used this site and knows if this is a genuine discount, or if the prices will be as good, or even better, closer to Christmas. Hope I haven't broken any protocols by mentioning the name.

All help appreciated.

What price is it? Is it plastic or wooden? Does it come with a board?
All things to consider.
I don't know the site, but Staunton is the name of the style of "official" chess pieces, yes.

It's this one haba

so, wooden, with a board and a storage box. He's 7, so I'm thinking he could get a lot of years out of it? At the moment he enjoys playing (and plays at school), so my thinking was to get something half decent, rather than the flimsy plastic men and paper board that my daughters learnt on! Your comments are much appreciated.

I bought one from amazon. A wooden board where the pieces are stored inside. It is lovely

I looked at Amazon, but some of the boards seemed on the small side. Any details of what you bought would be very welcome, Jelly.

@Sallythedog, I bought this PEARL 35cm / 13.8in Popular European Wooden Chess Set! Hand Crafted Pieces and Chessboard by Master Of Chess [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MXEKM5H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dq1eAb9Z11CD?tag=mumsnetforum-21K]]

However, please note that it is not very posh/heirloom quality. It's quite lightweight. This was deliberate as I wanted something the kids could use without me getting stressed about lost pieces :) it's a lovely set and there are slots inside for each piece, not heat and easy to carry around.

I'll try the link again!

Thank you very much indeed Jelly. It's great to have a personal recommendation, and this set is more what I had in mind to pay. Like you, I am thinking about lost pieces and inadvertent damage. If he proves to be a Grand Master later on, then I'll re-consider, but I suspect I have years to save up!
