Magformers / Magna tiles

has anyone bought either of these and are they any good worth the extortionate price tag ? or are there any cheaper brands that are still good to play with? I prefer these two brands from what I have seen as they are not polarised like some of the cheaper brands.

I am thinking of them for my DS who will be just turned 3 at Christmas.

I have set up camelcamelcamel alerts for these two sets as I think a bigger set will allow much more freedom of creativity but the price alert level shows as them never having been that low so I think I'm not onto a winner here.

thanks in advance for any advice

We have Magformers. Couldn't justify the cost of magnatiles, which are slightly more expensive. My 2 boys (4 and 6) love them. You are right, you need a decent number to make play open ended. It's worth looking on ebay for cheaper 2nd hand sets. They don't break easily or age so 2nd hand is just as good, although still not cheap. I started with a pack of 62 and then got some 2nd hand wheels and 40 or so extra shapes 2nd hand. I did a bit of research and concluded that, although you can get cheaper brands like Playmags, the magnets were probably not strong enough.

Magna tiles have the strongest magnets and will last years. But pricey!

Ah good to know, thanks!

We have magformers and DD(4) and DS(2) love them. It is best to get as many as possible though. My two also like making patterns with the shapes, not just building things.
