Lego train sets - good? Reviews?

Hi, I have two boys aged 4&6. Both lego mad & have loved wooden train tracks (still do!). They've started asking for lego train tracks for Christmas, but I've never actually seen it built. Is it good, best kits?, robust enough to play with? And where an earth do you but it!? Any tips, reviews, ideas welcome... Thanks

Try to look at any toy store, I'm sure they have those.

My son is nearly 6 (I also have a nearly-4yo daughter). He has also been obsessed with wooden trains and track from an early age, and when he discovered Lego, their train sets seemed like the natural progression. He'd also seen them in action at Lego expos etc and was desperate for a track! We got him 2 lego train sets for xmas and some extra track sets. The track comes in straights, curves and junctions much like the wooden stuff, although it is a bit fiddly to clip together. The trains are as robust as you'd expect Lego to be. My son does love it, however, it can be frustrating as the trains do tend to come off the tracks and all the wheels have to be carefully lined up to put them back. The batteries also run down very quickly.

As for where to buy, shop around for good deals. Sometimes that's John lewis, or amazon, or even asda had some great deals before xmas.

Join up on Lego.com, you earn points for purchases (VIP members), or keep an eye on the sales. There is a website called brickset, they will post sales/discounts at different stores on there. They're also on FB, along with another called Bricks and Bloks.

The train sets are horrendously expensive. We have that passenger train, the Maersk, and the hogwarts express (haven't opened it's box yet). The Maersk doesn't come with an engine/motor function, you'll have to buy that separately if you wanted that set, same with Hogwarts.

The age of your DSs, it's a bit fragile if they pick it up or take a dislike to certain bits of it. My DS1 doesn't like the oh electric grip things on the roof, so always takes them off. I tried to build ours up again when we moved, and just could not be bothered, that was over a year ago. We have the tracks screwed down on 3 big particle boards, so we have a nice flat surface, and can be put away under a bed when not in use. My plan was to paint some green, etc.. on it, and build the city buildings we have on it, and a house etc.... But never got around to it.
