Hello, we're hoping to buy ds a new bike for his birthday (10 next month). He's quite (just under 5ft) and I'd be grateful for any recommendations please. Ideally something lightweight. TIA

Depending on how much you want to spend, the Ridgeback bikes are great.

I second the suggestion of Ridgeback. Islabikes are also awesome, well built and lightweight but definitely not the cheapest option.

How would the bike be used?

Both dh and dd (who is 9 but very tall) have Trek bikes. They are well made and sturdy, but lightweight. DD's bike is really adjustable in that you can move the pedals out a peg and the handle adjusts all ways so it should last her through to an adult sized bike, which makes the money worth spending. We bought ds (aged 8) a BMX for his birthday and are now looking for a cheap second hand mountain bike for him as he finds it impossible to ride.
