Leapster explorer/leapster or V-tech? Confused!

I'm wondering if anyone has advice on buying a Leapster (explorer or Leappad) versus V-Tech. For my 3 and 5 yo's to share. My 3yo loved playing with a friends Leapster explorer (trace the letters programme) and wondered if it would be good for a long car journey?
