Train Sets for a 6 Year old

My little one has one of those Brio Wooden ones (well actually he borrows it from Grandma's house) and he has asked for a train set for his birthday or if not that, then if Santa can bring one.

Im happy to get him one but to be honest, I dont want to get one of those rubbish plastic things that will break within a few weeks (like the hot wheels bike thing we got him etc).

Do you think the wooden ones are still acceptable for his age group and can you recommend any decent ones?

Im willing to spend between £30 and £80 on a decent set.

Any proper toy shops in your area? Go and see what they've got. Hornby OO was a great favourite but it is proper model stuff not robust plastic toys, I wonder if 6 is a bit young for this, but maybe a grownup may like to play too?

the wooden ones are the best, because they dnt' break.
