Can anyone recommend a decent children's guitar - one where the strings stay tightened and don't come out of place?! TIA.

Don't buy a 'toy' one if you're serious about your child learning to play. Better to get to a music shop and buy a beginner package for about £40-£50.
Depending on age of child you may want a 1/2 or 3/4 size one...

DS1 has had Stagg guitars and they were very good.
