Megabloks or Duplo Thomas the Tank Engine?

DS is mad about Thomas and I'm contemplating getting his some Thomas duplo or megabloks. Are they 'much of a muchness' or do they by any chance mix and match well?

Thanks SGM - are the engines and components completely different sizes? He's got some basic duplo bricks and megabloks bricks which were given to him but not sure how the size of stuff in the sets compare.

Thanks. I've just been looking at the mega bloks ones and they look like better value for money.

We're purely duplo here! Would recommend because I think the Duplo range is enormous, and if you get the Thomas stuff, you can also get other Duplo stuff - say, a farm, or a big box of blocks and stuff to double it up.
This is also true of Megabloks too, though.

Once you're moving on to Lego, though, they fit with the Duplo! Smile

My DS's favourite toy since he showed preference has been a small Duplo cow. (I am a bit Hmm because he has the option of teddies, dolls, cuddly items, toys in human form...but no, a plastic unrealistic cow is his favourite.)

Dewin - It is true that duplo does appeal to the side of me DS that likes to collect matching 'stuff'. Although, won't he have grown out of Thomas by the time he's into proper lego?

There's an interesting phase around 4 years old when they are into both lego and duplo at the same time. We have some interesting combinations at the moment.

We have a huge bag of megablocks in the loft waiting for DS2 to get a bit older so he can have it. But I found duplo much better once they are about 2 years old.

Pancakeflipper · 28/10/2010 17:37

Duplo in this house. 5 yr old has now moved onto Lego and still hauls out parts of the Duplo now passed onto younger siblings for his Lego creations.

Lego is the bestest toy invention ever. For 3 hrs today my father and my eldest sat at the dining table creating various vehicles and garages. They were soooo quiet.

Thanks all, the decision was taken out of my hands in the end as Mil has bought DS some mega bloks, but he'll no doubt end up with some other non-Thomas duplo anyway!

Mini mega bloks are cheaper than Duplo but virtually exactly the same blocks. All mini mega blocks and duplo toys are compatible.

BornToFolk · 10/11/2010 14:35

I discovered recently that the Mega Bloks trains fit on DS's wooden (Brio-style) tracks which is a bonus!

nappyaddict · 10/11/2010 14:42

The Thomas mega bloks use the mini mega bloks don't they, not the maxi ones?

BornToFolk · 10/11/2010 14:45

Yeah, the mini ones. About the size of Duplo I think but have not checked to see if they are compatible.

nappyaddict · 10/11/2010 14:48

Hmmm I bought DS some Thomas mega bloks for Christmas in the summer sale. He is now moving onto lego and I was going to sell them. But if they fit onto the Brio track I may keep them ....

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 11/11/2010 20:30

Thanks - v useful to know that the megabloks and duplo are compatible. If the trains fit on brio even better!

Do you have brio too?

Grin at the thought of contaminating the lego with megabloks MadamDeathstare! The GPs have bought DS a big megabloks Thomas set for Christmas now, but before I knew that I ordered a duplo Thomas set which I was going to return, but if they do sort of fit, then I'll keep the duplo anyway as he's got/is getting from other relatives some other non-Thomas duplo.

Nappyaddict - we do have a brio train set, I had no idea that the duplo/megabloks trains might fit on the brio track. Haven't tried it out yet as DS hasn't been given the duplo/megabloks as yet.

The problem with all of this is that it encourages my compulsive collection tendencies. I just want to keep adding to it all! Grin
