Yellow scooter OK for a boy?

Need advice please. We are planning to buy DS a micro scooter for his 3rd birthday. I like the rather funky limited edition colours in John Lewis - and yes, I know, I know, 55 quid! But we don't generally spend a lot on toys, and if we are going to have to spend 40-50 quid on one anyway, then I'm OK with it as I do believe it will last.

Anyway, here's the question. DS currently likes everything in yellow. OH says this is a colour for girls, and although DS might prefer a yellow one now, when he's 4 or 5 he might not like it.

I asked the assistant in JL for a second opinion, and she agreed that yellow was a more girly colour.

I am baffled. I had thought of yellow as neutral (I am not a fan of the ubiquitous pink/blue), but with the advantage of being more visible and less common so we could easily pick it out in the park.

However it would obviously be wrong to fork out 55 quid for something that DS will reject in a year's time, especially as I have another DS who I would like to use it when he's older. Can anyone advise?

Yellow a girls colour? Nah. I've always seen it as neutral or, at a push, a boys colour. Probably because of tonka trucks now I think of it.

My son used to have a whole collection of JCB type diggers and dozers, all yellow.

Yellow is fine for boys. I've never come across a boy saying it's girly.

chillipickle · 06/10/2010 09:04

Thank you, thank you all. So relieved to hear I'm not going mad. Of course DS will probably have a new favourite colour next week, but for now I will not hesitate to buy 'digger yellow'.

oh ffs, this makes me really angry. not at you OP! but this thing about girl colours and boy colours- since when? what a ridiculous thing to say
i mean yellow? i've already seen threads on here about "is red too girly?" as well

so boys should just have blue blue blue blue blue. oh and let's not forget brown, grey and sludge green Angry it makes me so cross

piprabbit · 06/10/2010 09:14

Bob the builder's hat is yellow, so are JCBs, the Simpsons and wasps.

Your DH and the shoplady are barking.

chillipickle · 06/10/2010 10:31

thisisyesterday, I totally agree! It had never even crossed my mind that yellow wasn't for everybody. I can (sort of) understand OH being uber-cautious before parting with the cash, but I was fully expecting the shoplady to put him straight.

DinahRod, hahahahahahaha!!! Love it!!! And you have won my argument. OH grudgingly admits you are right. Grin

WTF??! WHo on Earth makes up this rubbish? Sorry to sound so aggressive, I really don't mean to address it to you personally, but to this whole weird obsession with gender rules. The colour rubbish is getting ridiculous!

Why can't adults (with all their learned conservatism) leave children alone to enjoy all the wonderful things in the world including the full colour spectrum!

Yellow for girls?! -Tell that to Van Gogh!

MWestie · 08/10/2010 23:35

chillicpickle - my DS has a yellow micro scooter, he loves it to bits, and has had so many nice compliments about its colour. Go for it, they're fab.

chipmonkey · 08/10/2010 23:46

Jesus, I have heard it all now! Are the new rules that the girls get all the fun colours and the boys get sackcloth and ashes? Sad and Angry especially at the assistant.

I bought my DD a very nice fuschia jumper from Next. It was on the 'boys' rail. Her friend has a pale pink 'boys' jumper from M&S. A lot of the girls clothes are 'sludge'.

Its getting better! Grin
