Thinking of getting one for my DS's 4th birthday and can't afford a DS! Any advice??

I have 2, wouldn't recommend tbh but that could just be y kids as a friends children loved them. Ours are in the loft.

Ds had one a few years ago and i thought it was great. Just avoid cartoon themed games as they have a lot less on them than the leapster own ones.

DS (5) is getting one for Xmas (got it from tescos for 25 quid - sorry pound sign not working on lap top Blush)

TBH its basically to see if he will look after a DS properly then leapster will be handed to DD (2.8)

Good thinking simpson!
I think its actually called a Leapster Explorer, the DS really wants which is usually £60. The games are £20 a time.

If you don't mind preloved I could let you have ours for a donation to dd's xmas present Grin.
Though I am now wondering if I am Confused as I thought they were called leap pads??

We bought dd2 one when she was 3yr 9mo for Christmas. We bought dd1 (was almost 7 at the time) a ds and bought dd2 the leapster. She loved it!! She played with it for a good couple of years until she got her own ds ...and even then she played with the leapster as well Smile

I've just bought dd3 a leapster explorer for Christmas (she'll be 3 and a half), I'm hoping she'll love it as much as her sister did!

I think DS's (its in attic, has been there for 2mths Blush but was on special offer) is a leapfrog leapster....

cornsilk · 04/10/2010 21:12

my6 ds loved his - it's very sturdy and still working now.

NothingButTheTeuch · 04/10/2010 21:12

DS is 4 and got one last christmas - he calls it his 'DS' Grin

Leapster games are much better and also look out for BOGOF deals on the games (usually Toys R Us) and amazon do deals on them now and again.

I was very impressed with how DS got the hang of the games (he just had the free one to start!) and how quickly he has come on using it.

Make sure you take it out the box before birthday as you have to download the free game! DS has Diego Animal Rescue, Leapster Write & Draw, Cars and some free Wolverine demo game...he plays the free chicken game and the Animal rescue ones the most.

If you are bothered, you can plug it into your pc and see how your child is progressing Grin

I would recommend, particularly if you get a good deal.

The leappads are the reading ones - they're a total waste of money IMHO

simpson · 04/10/2010 21:16

Am going to tell DS that its a DS (his best friend has got one but he won't be able to tell the difference iyswim)

Didn't know I had to down load game, cheers for tip!!

CDMforever · 04/10/2010 21:22

All sounds very positive! Can't seem to find any deals any where tho. Does anyone know anywhere that sells them less than £60 at the mo?

Have you done the usual Amazon/E bay?? etc...

NothingButTheTeuch · 05/10/2010 08:06

Argos is £53 I think...

jollyma · 05/10/2010 13:16

Ds's one isn't internet linked or anything as its a few years old. If you are thinking of moving on to a ds it might be worth looking for an old model that would be a lot cheaper.

elc sell them for £60 but if you buy little stars yogurts you can get a 20% off voucher so will be £48. We have just bought 1 for DS 4th birthday as his friend has a DS which he loves but thought this would be a good compromise!

CDMforever · 08/10/2010 21:17

Got one from Argos for £54. Just need to remember to upload games etc before the big day!
