Ds1 (5.5) is currently obsessed with Doctor Dolittle (original story - it has animals and pirates and kidnapping). You'll have to get tapes off ebay though.
You can also get the first 2 famous five books on cd from ebay pretty cheaply - they were newspaper freebies so loads available.
