Trying to choose between two toy kitchens

I want to buy the kids a toy kitchen for Christmas. It will be a joint present so am prepared to spend whatever it takes.

I am currently looking at the red retro kitchen (wooden) or the Step 2 kitchen (plastic?).

Red Retro

Step 2

I would be so grateful for any advice on this, as it is obviously a big purchase and if I get it wrong it will haunt me for ever.

Also if anyone has any better ideas please let me know! (It needs to be a big kitchen so two can play happily together).

I prefer no 1 a) it looks better

b) i think wood stands up to more - when they are arguing about who is going to get those delicious cakes out of the oven!

Red Retro

Mine is very similar to the red one, but a different colour. I have had it for four years and it has been played with constantly and it's still tip top.

Plenty of doors to open and shut and good storage are important I think. You want all of the food and things to be able to go in the cupboards.

I do believe that IKEA has just brought out some nice fabric play food.

Does it need to be in one piece, if not look here

silverfrog · 31/08/2010 07:51

Prefer the red retro out of the two you.linked to.

My dds have the Kidkraft one - can't link as on phone, but is big. Quite similar to the red retro one, so fridge, freezer, cooker, hob, microwave, cupboard, sink etc.

red one, we have a pastel retro one, ha it 4 years now and still in perfect nick and played with constantly. Ikea also do fab crockery and glasses and stuff for kitchen.

Racers · 31/08/2010 07:53

Red retro - we bought it last year and love it!

Trubert · 31/08/2010 07:55

KatyMac - I do love the separate appliances, but I fear I would need to build a new room on the house to fit them all in. :)

I was definitely going to buy the wooden one, but then I read reviews saying that the Step 2 is sturdier and will last longer. However it seems to have sounds built which could be quite annoying after about 30 seconds.

We have a wooden one, similar but pastel, and it's fab. Plastic ones look horrid.

amidaiwish · 31/08/2010 08:03

def 1.
my friends have that Lifestyle Dream one and haven't been that impressed with it.
wood over plastic every time with these toys.
also did you read 12 AA batteries? 12!!!!! and with buzzers and sounds they will not last long.

Nettiespagetti · 31/08/2010 08:07
