Just wondering about present for 3 yr old he hasn't had lego duplo before and the age range is 2-5 would i be best getting duplo or normal lego?

Duplo, my 10yo still plays with it when he's in the mood; can build bigger things faster! Fine motor skills required for Lego are too much for most children under 6 (ime).

Ds had duplo at 1yr Old at 5 he has the 8-14 proper lego. Age range dependant on child's dexterity and whether they put things in mouth and role play.

Big city zoo is good for children as animal, building and role play opportunities. I like the kit but know for ds it would have been wasted as he wouldnt have the role play skills to handle.

Get if:
child into animals
Likes role play

otherwise lego do a whole range of other type kits now that might be more suitable. Have a look here lego website's duplo section as there might be something you might like better or think is more suitable for the way the child will play.

Although this post is abit muddled I would vote for duplo as i know how much fun ds got out of it.

Yes, definitely the duplo.

The next one up is so much smaller and more intricate.

We've got the zoo and both my 2 year old and 4 year old love it.

def duplo...my ds who's 7 will still play with it if no-one's looking! he got "big boy lego" at 5 but struggled with it for more than a short time until more recently.

IMO you want to go for a big duplo base and as many people/animals/vehicles as you can. ebay's good.

duplo.lego.com/en-us/products/default.aspx#5653 this is the sort of stuff ds prefered over the animals

Thank you for all the help and ideas i'll definitely go for the duplo then .
My ds is really into animals so thought the zoo would be great and then can expand at christmas etc as he would also like the vehicles.

Is the best place to buy from the official lego site?

Depends. You can often get really good offers at toysrus/tescos etc so it is worth shopping round.

Ds has been collecting powerminers lego with his birthday and christmas money and it can be hard to track the kits he wants so lego webste is good for that. But it does take over a week to get sometimes - i think they quoted 14days delivery last time. So worth having a hunt about first.
