I have lots of different groups of friends. We arrange to meet up every few weeks, always in the eve. Never a whole day thing, unless a special occasion. And never on a Saturday night. That's prime DH/ family time imo and these friends seemingly have the same mindset. Which is perfect for all of us. We might exchange a few "how are you" type of messages inbetween meet ups. I really love these meet ups with these different groups of friends and the timings of our meet ups and level of contact. Its not super intense. We're there for each other when needed.

And then there is my friendship with A...

... A will message every day, regardless of the time. Later in the week she will ask what im doing at the weekend. She asks this every weekend. This could be a polite "just asking/showing an interest" thing ... or could be fishing to see what time i have free. I always feel it's the later and that I'm having to justify my time. Admittedly, I purposely make my plans sound like I have zero free time all weekend to meet up. Its not that I don't want to see A, but I don't want a whole day out - which is what she can like to do - when it's not a special occasion eg birthday. I rarely want a saturday night out with A as that's my DH/ family time. If i told her this, I think she would be upset. I would see A for a coffee at the weekend, but she then tries to stretch that out for as many hours as she possibly can. A is single. She works FT and has a lot going on generally. A is someone who has to have plans for every hour of the day esp weekend. cannot bear to alone, ever, and cannot do anything alone and has no hobbies.

I now probably sound like a complete selfish bitch and terrible friend. But as I've got older - I'm 52 - I just want to be at home most weekends, in my comfies, away from busy/crowds/noise/people places and interspersed with the occasional 5m run, alone.

Someone who tries to nag you to stay when you've made it quite clear that you are not available for that, and who starts acting "disappointed" when told no, is like a child. Why would any friend try and persuade you to do something you don't want to do? Do you really want to be friends with her? If it happens again tell her you don't appreciate being put under pressure and bye, got to go now, see you soon. You don't have to "feel like shit", you aren't her carer, you aren't leaving her out in the rain to starve.

You should also be able to understand that if she is single then she is likely to want to spend more of the weekend with friends for company, including Saturday nights. It might be nice to give her that sometimes, even if it is just a quiet evening in together with a takeaway and a film.

No. Family time is for family only, not friends.

not even a good friend who might be lonely at the weekend and really appreciate some company?

(not saying that is the situation here, but your view seems very restrictive and not very kind)

When i give firm timeframes I'm then made to feel like shit

Me - im good today until 12 for coffee then I'll need to nip off
A - Oh what?? (Said very disappointingly), I wanted to have a long walk (eg) after our coffee and was looking forward to that

I then feel like shit for cutting A short with time

Sigh. No one is ‘making you’ feel like shit. You’re choosing to ‘feel like shit’. But obviously, if it’s so terrible, choose the other type of discomfort and spend the entire day doing something you don’t want to do while seething in silence. You choose.

Couldn’t you spare half a day, bloody hell

@irregularegular

i don’t believe that really I was only messing. Hopefully no one is that rigid!

I would do an odd Saturday eve with A
... maybe 1 in every 5 or 6. But I feel the more I do it, then the more often she wants. I feel bad, but in my current phase of life i just want weekend nights in with DH atm,, especially now it's winter and cold/ dark/,wet

I don’t think you’re a bad friend for not wanting to be available 24/7 for her, but I think you’re being a bad friend in the sense you’re not being clear about it and it just keeps dragging.

A simple “A, ily but as I work FT I’m not really up for weekend days out as I want to spend time with my family. I’m sorry but we can meet for coffee [or whatever] every now and then, it’s just that it can’t be a whole day. I hope you understand”.

You seem obsessed with what you imagine she wants. If you approach every situation via ‘Does this work for me?’ you will find life much easier, than your current phase of wishing you could control what you think someone else wants of you and resenting them for not wanting what you want.

When you work full time and have kids you're running here there and everywhefe, half a day is a massive amount of your free time to give up!

Agree. Half a day is a quarter of my weekend. It also leaves little time to do much else in the day eg if a Sunday then shops close 4pm
