HaveANiceFuckingDay · Yesterday 18:22

Exactly this.
I want a porch
DH wants a porch
He wants a toilet in the porch
Personally I dont want to do my business in the Porch , there are 5 adults in this house all with coats / trainers / hoodies / shoes, we will lose space just to have a shithouse?
He is not budging . I am not budging
We have a downstairs loo we have an upstairs loo.. I am " not practical ". Because I said it takes away space unnecessarily. He said it won't. We can fit a shoe rack in where the loo willl go
He makes the massiive decisions and its another way of saying " i earn.more i get to decide " , he dosent admit to this but I never get a say at all he says its " you're impractical " and apparently EVERYONE has an outside shitter in the porch
I hate the fucking dog , he wanted it . I didnt . He got the fucking dog
He wants to drop the kerb ( we can get 2 cars on the dropped kerb we have . I have reluctantly agreed to this as eventually it will be permit parking , we are 5 minutes walk to a train station that goes into central London. So that makes.sense ) but it low priority. It taken time but he was absolutely adamant for a dropped kerb
He won't budge on this pisser in the porch .
The downstairs loo will be turned into a larder
I don't want a larder, he doesnt cook i do 95% of the cooking my kitchen is fine. Im happy with it , I do now get the porch thing , I get we need it with very limited space and not really enough for 5 adults .
He says. EVERYONE has a shit house in the porch. ALLLL the neighbours have one
I dont care what Ralph from number 63 has
Ive never heard of this

Our toilet is beside the door (no porch) and I hate it. People coming to the door can see, if we don't close the blind, us sitting on the toilet.

Your DH sounds like the kind of man who won't mind if people knocking on the door can smell that he is or has been using his Toilet In The Porch but it might be worth considering for the others who might use it, if anybody does.

Do you think he will use it @HaveANiceFuckingDay or does he just want it because you want storage space?

BreezyClouds · Yesterday 18:42

It's very common near me, the only way to add a downstairs loo.

YourJoyousDenimExpert · Yesterday 18:58

If you have a downstairs loo already , you definitely don’t need one in the porch. We have a porch with coats, sports equipment and umbrellas in it - no toilet! I have never heard of a loo in a porch at all….
You might be able to dissuade him with likely costs if the position of the imagined loo in the porch would not easily connect to the sewer pipe….??? Hope you win on this!

hididdlyho · Yesterday 19:00

A bit odd it you already have a downstairs toilet. Couldn't you use part of the porch as a larder instead and save yourselves the cost and hassle of fitting an extra toilet?

namechangeformeeee · Yesterday 19:01

You’re not unreasonable to not want a loo in the porch, that sounds mental! But you are unreasonable to hate a poor dog

He says he will use it as the upstairs loo is with the bath and shower and is often in use as there are 5 adults so we all use the toilet / bath / shower. . The downstairs loo we have is very handy for that reason but he wants the current downstairs loo turned into a larder , which I don't need and have a toilet in the porch instead
I dont want it , I dont want the world and every delivery driver using it as many may ask " while im here can I quickly use your loo "? . I think getting rid of one and replacing it with another is unnecessary and another unnecessary expense . Its not an extra toilet its getting rid of one and getting another in its place
And like a PP says i dont want to crap outside and have that smell lingering in an enclosed space , he may not mind but I do

I have a loo next to the back door. It is in a tiny room beside what delivery people assume to be the porch, and granted, it's handy when you rush home from work and are in need of a pee (or the time when I unexpectedly vomited). However, if you already have a downstairs loo, is it really too far to walk from the porch? Also, who decided that your household needed a larder and why, if you sound like you're the one who does most of the cookery? Storage space is useful, but if you don't need it, there isn't much point in having it!

That actually sounds like a very good idea to me . It would mean me having to schlep from the porch to the kitchen but thats not a big deal to me . I do the majority of the cooking anyway. If im at work until late he will fix himself crackers with cheese or chutneys or avocado, he won't actually cook anything . So a larder would not benefit him in the slightest

If you do put a toilet in the porch. Please, please, please use frosted glass.

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · Yesterday 19:59

I'd give your dh a divorce..whether the fucker wants one or not.

NoisyMonster678 · Yesterday 20:03

Just tell him OP, the fumes after someone has 'taken a dump' will gas people at the front door, and your visitors may not enjoy that.

Denim4ever · Yesterday 20:20

Parents had a huge 50s semi. Everyone added a downstairs loo in a porch. A proper extension type arrangement. About 2 families did them in the understairs. Only one of those had a proper reconfiguring including a window of some sort. Basically the difference in the layout change was loo by the new back door extension/porch versus loo up the other end of the hall that was much more cramped and reduced the size of the hall. Personally, I think the clue is that a downstairs loo is often named a 'cloakroom' kinda tells you where it is traditionally located.

New houses I know - as in 1990s onwards. They are always the door end of the hall. Basically the porch end.

But .... if you already have a downstairs loo in a useful area then you don't need 2.

In our old cottage we have an entire bathroom - bath, shower, loo downstairs where some have a utility and our utility/pantry is a vast space under the stairs. In our layout this works as planning permission to extend the boot room for a loo would fail

ILoveKits · Yesterday 20:22

This has nothing to do with a bog in the porch.

rjfiih · Yesterday 20:25

He's right about the dropped kerb. That will save a load of hassle with parking and people parking badly in front of your drive making it difficult to get cars on and off.

The toilet in the porch is not necessary and is a waste of space. The larder is also a waste of space.

TakeMe2Insanity · Yesterday 20:31

Lets be honest you have a DH problem. This isn’t about him earning more money. This is about him not valuing your opinion. Sorry.

But in new houses the loo is always right by the front door. People on Mumsnet complain endlessly about loos off the kitchen. Where else do they go 🤣

PaperPanama · Yesterday 21:17

No, it is not the modern thing to have the loo by the front door. It is a historic thing, from when loos were first retro-fitted in houses. There was often a space or a large cupboard with a window at the foot of the stairs, by the front door. Originally it would literally have been the ‘cloak’ room: where people took their coats off and hung them up out of the way. It was easy to enclose and repurpose, and the loo could be installed on an outside wall, with a short, uncomplicated route to join the street sewer.

This style has become part of our British architectural background. And it’s easy to fit into modern houses.

But is it pleasant or desirable? No. Absolutely not. Who wants to be the visitor ringing the doorbell, hearing their host peeing and pooing, and, even worse, smelling it?! Who wants to be the host in that situation, and then answering the door?!

Our loo is under the stairs, just outside the kitchen. We have space for a loo in our entrance, and I would LOVE a walk-in larder. But I do not have a walk-in larder because not in a million years would I move the loo to the front door!

And I keep a good space for coats/shoes/buggies/greeting guests/milling around.

BTW your dh sounds like a controlling prize prick.

pulpJarvis · Yesterday 21:18

You don’t sound like you like him very much…

BobbiBiscuits · Yesterday 21:19

Sorry do you mean have a toilet in a porch at the front of the house as you walk in? Is he mad? That is really grim. No no no no no!

BaronessBomburst · Yesterday 21:32

It will be absolutely freezing in the winter.

Newusername2026 · Yesterday 21:45

I am not clear on the plans being proposed but I think you are saying you already have a downstairs loo but he wants to move it. That is a bit daft IMO due to the amount of work required moving pipes etc. But it seems like this is just an illustrative example of your relationship and him pulling rank based on income. So you probably need to decide if you can bear this ilor ship out

Ophy83 · Yesterday 21:53

It is interesting that some people are really familiar with loos in porches and others have never seen them. I'm in the latter category, I wonder if there are geographical trends

Needmorelego · Yesterday 21:56

I cannot visualise a toilet in a porch at all.
I know of toilets in cloakrooms but a cloakroom is different to a porch 🤷
@HaveANiceFuckingDay is he actually likely to get round to doing it though?

I think some people are visualising a porch as a glassed-in enclosure around the front door. Yes, a loo in such a porch would be seriously weird. But I think that when the OP says ‘porch’ she means a solid, brick-built extension that brings the front door forward. The loo would be in a walled-off section of this porch, with an internal door to it. Not at all uncommon.

Still unattractive. And unnecessary.
