Out-of-date coleslaw?

Is it safe to eat supermarket bought coleslaw past it's 'best before' date?
I misread the date, thought that it was 29th Sept and it's 23rd !!
It tastes OK, but I've only had a small taste and it doesn't look like it's fermenting (yet)...

I wouldn’t.

A couple of days, yes. Three… Depending on smell and taste, possibly. But I think you’re chancing it anything over that.

I got food poisoning a couple months ago from cole slaw that was only off by a day so no, I absolutely wouldn't.

Does it contain cream? Some of the “lux” ones do.

fumingrightnow1 · 29/09/2026 13:14

Not worth it

Sallycinnamum · 29/09/2026 13:22

My friend had terrible food poisoning from out of date coleslaw a few years ago so no way would I risk it!

No, no cream in it.

You'll be fine. @FusionChefGeoff reported back this morning that she's still alive after eating out of date coleslaw the other day Grin

Hers was three weeks out of date Shock

Yikes !😮

I wouldn't have thought cream would be relevant, that lasts ages after the use by date.

That sort of product probably goes unpleasantly watery/slimy before it actually becomes dangerous, so if it looks and tastes fine, it most likely is fine.

FusionChefGeoff · 29/09/2026 16:41

thanks @DramaAlpacayou saved me digging out the link - I just KNEW that would be helpful but didn’t think it would come up so soon GrinGrin

So, @Shadymeadow , is your further silence due to you eating the coleslaw and being dead/lying on the floor bringing up your intestines, or did you just chuck it in the bin? Or were you brave and gave it a go and you’re still here to tell the tale? 😆

Thanks for your interest.
I took fright and binned it, after making a mental note to use the correct glasses when reading the writing on food items 😳
