Was I rude to painter?

Plastered my flat and got quotes to paint it. Three decorators said it needs a mist coat. They also quoted between £6k and £10k.

The fourth decorator quoted £4k. I asked about the mist coat and they said they didn't know what it was and it was a made up term but to instead use a primer coat.

I sent them an article, all very polite, about the differences between the mist and primer and i got a very angry, rage quitting message back telling me if i am the expert i should paint it myself.

This happened over message. i never met him as my partner was in when he came to quote but he said he was cold and short with him.

Was I rude?

No it absolutely isn’t a made up term; lol at anyone suggesting it is, is a very standard method for sealing new plaster prior to top coats and any amount of internet searches will confirm this.

If you’ve got a load of fresh plaster to paint and your decorator has never heard of the term “mist coat” then find another decorator, as the consequences of skipping this part, or messing it up are really quite serious/messy.

All terms are made up.
It isn’t a new term and has been around for decades. You just never knew it had a name.

You have absolutely no idea what he meant by primer.

100% you were in the right and this is why you never go for the cheapest quote he was in the wrong

Re drainage for 10 years I had bathroom water draining over my path and wall. I had new bathroom fitted and he said you had the wrong shoe fitted and sorted it out. Couple years later I had guttering done and they had the water running all over my path and wall again

when I asked him to change the shoe he had a massive go at me telling me who was I to make things up and practically started jumping up and down at me
