If a friend mocked you, would you want to continue the friendship?

If they'd called you 'boring' 'granny' behind your back and said 'I've realised we're very different' 'stresshead' and because you'd said something innocuous such as 'you didn't like spending all day at the beach' they'd twisted this and said 'omg, she said she doesn't like going to the beach wtf!' Then mimicked your voice in front of you in a high-pitched way.

Would you feel comfortable with this person and be able to trust them? It's the way they've acted like this rather than just speaking to your face if there is an issue. Mocking behind your back and calling you names isn't great.

Why are you even asking. Dump. Block. Ignore.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 27/07/2026 14:36

How old are they, eight?

Seacatt · 27/07/2026 14:40

I've had this and I dumped them. I woudn't have felt comfortable chatting away around them, knowing that what I say would be repeated mockingly either to my face or behind my back.

OriginalSkang · 27/07/2026 14:40

I would never speak to this person again

CinnamonBuns67 · 27/07/2026 14:45

No don't be friends with someone like that, been there done that, never again.

Whoops75 · 27/07/2026 14:55

You clearly irritate the s**t out of this person.
Does she irritate you?

Who is the 3rd person?

Unless ye are part of a wider group and can ignore each other then I wouldn’t be in their company.

Gentlydoesit2 · 27/07/2026 13:04

That's not how friends treat each other

This is how my parents are with me on a regular basis, sadly. :( One takes regular opportunities to put me down so they can position themselves as superior or triumphant, and generic nasty, disdainful put-downs or reactions are so common from the other that they have to make an effort just to be kind or normal in a way that just polite colleagues in an office would chat to each other.

HappyWelsh · 27/07/2026 15:34

DontBuyAnotherBook · 27/07/2026 11:21

You won't trust them again plus what sort of friend says those things? I would just do a slow fade and cut contact.

Agree, but I wouldn’t do a slow fade, I’d tell them to FO. Really shitty friends

I don't like confrontation but I would immediately stop talking or being with them.

DogearedPaperbackWriter · 27/07/2026 16:04

Nope, that's not a friendship, so I'd no longer bother with them. If they're part of a larger friendship group (possibly the person or persons they're talking to behind your back), cutting her out of your life might possibly taint some other friendships, but that's just how things go sometimes. I wouldn't stay friends with someone who insulted me, though. I'd genuinely rather be alone.

TwoPintsOfCherryadeAndAPacketOfQuavers · 27/07/2026 16:06

I’ve ditched a friend recently over a variety of things but there were three instances of her mocking me (two online) that I thought were just mean. I don’t need that in my life. I’m in my fifties, not a teenage girl.

CypressMoon · 27/07/2026 16:08

That sort of behaviour isn't worth a minute of your time. I think the pain of finding out things like this comes more from realising that you trusted and liked someone not worthy of your friendship, which feels like a serious error of judgement, and that is an unsettling feeling. But in terms of losing out on a friendship - there isn't one. No loss.

MyDarlingRose · 27/07/2026 16:18

For those things no I wouldn’t want to be friends because they said it all behind my back and it’s nastiness. I’d tell them they disgust me and cut them out of my life.

Mygardenshedisfallingdown · 27/07/2026 16:39

Switherings · 27/07/2026 14:11

That's @BauhausOfEliott 's point. She doesn't like you, and is quite upfront about it, so why do you need permission from the internet to stop befriending her?

These threads are so common on here. It's utterly bizarre to me that so many Mners seem to have friends they don't like, and who don't like them either, and to still appear to need permission to ditch them.

!00% Some MNers have never really grown up from being young girls. This is in the respect needing permission to do things, end relationships, marriages et al.
It does make me wonder how they cope with life in general if they are so worried and anxious with the mundane things.

Exactly. If you need permission from the internet to drop a 'friend' whom you don't like and who doesn't like you either, how on earth do you make someone redundant, or tell an elderly parent in denial about their driving skills that it's past time to hang up their keys, or set boundaries with a school-refusing teenager, or end a relationship, or negotiate for a raise, or tell a tradesman the work is not up to scratch or resolve a neighbour dispute or any of the genuinely ticklish things the average person has to do on a regular basis?

Snappythecrocodile1 · 27/07/2026 18:06

I'm not asking for permission, I'm asking whether in other people's shoes they'd consider this the end of a friendship or not.

I did like her initially despite all the 'you clearly don't like her anyway' comments which are baseless

But what people are telling you is that there appears to be no friendship there, so there's nothing to end. This person clearly doesn't like you. Friendship is a two-way thing.

Yes, because it isn't a friendship.

BauhausOfEliott · 27/07/2026 23:28

Snappythecrocodile1 · 27/07/2026 13:52

It doesn't really matter what their side is, I'm talking about their behaviour here, that's all that is relevant. And am I supposed to 'clearly like' someone who's done this to me?

No. I didn’t say you’re supposed like this person at all - my post isn’t ambiguous on that matter so I’m not sure where you’re getting that from.

I’m just not sure what you want from this thread, as you’ve obviously already made up your mind about her and only you know what the situation is, so what are you expecting people to add? Do you just want everyone to agree that your friend is a bitch without knowing any of the context?

BauhausOfEliott · 27/07/2026 23:34

Why, though? Why do you need to know what other people would do? Other people aren’t you.

I don’t know what I’d do, personally, because you haven’t shared any of the circumstances in which this happened or what else might have occurred to build up to this point.

Not necessarily, a really good friend once came over , rolled eyes multiple times and put feet all over table.
I just redrew my boundaries and see her outside house now.

Nugg · 28/07/2026 00:02

I also feel the need to ask what sort of friend told you about all of this behaviour…?

pestowithwalnuts · 28/07/2026 06:25

Snappythecrocodile1 · 27/07/2026 11:20

I'd just find it hard to trust them again. What sort of friend is that really?

But it's not a friend is it ..
friends are there for each other..don't take the piss in a cruel way. You need out of this..

Willowwisp23 · 28/07/2026 08:05

They don't want to be your friend anymore. Maybe they're hoping you'll be the one to jump ship if they keep putting you down saving them the effort.
