Which jeans & top?

Heading out for a few drinks next Friday evening. Just to a few bars in town. Want to look casual and not like I’ve tried hard. Plan is to add gold jewellery and probably a black leather jacket or blazer.

I prefer light blue ripped jeans as I think the dark blue ones are too baggy at the back? Help me decide!

Jeans are one of those items of clothing that, IMO, should be a perfect cut & fit & style for you. And it can take a bit of effort trying different styles & brands to get a great pair.

Apologies, OP, but the dark ones - if they're meant to be wide-legged - are too loose at the back & don't look quite wide enough? And the light ones look dated, not in a retro way.

I would put them both on Vinted & go shopping for a perfect pair of dark wide-legged jeans. They're classic. Everything else will then work more easily. Your black blazer, a really well-cut T-shirt, a good belt & trainers (not boots at this time of year).

The simpler an outfit the more important it is - I think - to get the fit & proportions right?

I hate the shape of the darker ones. The lighter ones are much better but why the rips? Never understood that trend.

Any suggestions? 🙈

I prefer the darker jeans , I’d wear a summer top though or the vest in lighter colour .
Really do not like the boots , they seem very dated , you’re only 40 OP !
I’d wear flat summer sandals like the Birkenstocks .

Blinkfirst · 26/07/2026 23:53

Both look great!Where are the dark ones from, really like them?

The lighter ones are too tight especially around the crotch. Have to agree they look dated.
I have to envy anyone who could wear boots this weather - it's crazy!

The light ones are very dated. I thought we'd finally seen the last of pre-ripped jeans. They are too tight and it may just be an unfortunate seam but there's a bit of a camel toe as well.

The black are far better.

purpleflowersfordays · 27/07/2026 00:41

Lighter jeans but with a light top.

BigGra · 27/07/2026 00:44

The darker jeans are a lot more stylish than the lighter pair but I’m not sure they are a great fit on you, they do look a bit baggy at the back.
The black top, light jeans, black boots is a bit jarring.
I’d ditch the boots and go with trainers or a pointy toe sling back.

menopausequeen · 27/07/2026 00:50

Definitely not the black boots. Or the top.
choose a lighter top and as others have said wear trainers

Backnowagain · 27/07/2026 00:58

I hate the look of the lighter jeans so definitely darker imho. The fit isn’t the best but that’s what I’d go for of the two.

Awcw1234 · 27/07/2026 06:38

Thanks for all the replies. Annoyingly, the light jeans are brand new but I’ve taken the tag off them so can’t return. I’ll have to stick them on vinted. Tempted to try and shrink the darker ones 😂

The light jeans are nice, it’s just how they are styled here that makes them look dated. With a cropped jumper and trainers or a cropped t shirt and jacket they will look great.

OvernightBloats · 27/07/2026 06:48

Ripped jeans are very dated. The dark jeans look better but a bit baggy at the back. A wider belt would probably help to make the jeans fit a bit better.

likelysuspect · 27/07/2026 06:49

Darker jeans definitiely

pilates · 27/07/2026 06:52

Dark jeans but with trainers will look best.
The light jeans and shoes has an 80’s vibe.

If you like them keep them OP! They’re not bad. They would just look nicer more casual, I.e. with a white top instead of black and with trainers.

The darker jeans seem better for going out for drinks as you can make the outfit more dressy.

Apparently ripped jeans are coming back in - https://www.purewow.com/fashion/ripped-jeans-trend 😂
Going to have to get rid now that someone has mentioned it looks like I have a camel toe though! 🙈

Both jeans look nice, don't overthink it.
The outfit looks okay, but let's face it, a bit boring. Have you got a prettier top to wear? A bit of colour? I would be wearing a sandal and a top that's a bit more appropriate for the fact it's July/ very early August. Boots don't come out til new school season!

Randon selection of screenshots attached of possible tops from River Island- purely because you said that's where your jeans are from. I would wear any of these with the paler jean and a sandal, flat or heeled. I'm 41, in case that matters.

Definitely not the light ones, ripped jeans are so dated now and when you write coming back in, you know it’s confirmation, there were lots of predictions of them coming back in from the fashion magazines but they didn’t,

the dark ones are better,

fruitable · 27/07/2026 07:25

Darker jeans, no boots. Lighter top, bit of color? Or do you have a nice white shirt, over sized with some bright coloured flats / new trainers. Chunky chain or earrings… Sorry, I’ve just pulled your outfit apart!
Keep the ripped jeans, turn them up with some flat sandals and a fun graphic tshirt for daytime Smile

No you do not look like you have a camel toe at all OP .
I can’t see where they’re getting that from 🙄.

I’d say the lighter jeans will be nice just not with black boots, they would look lovely with Summer T- shirts & flip flops/flat sandals .
You have a fab figure btw ☺️

dudsville · 27/07/2026 08:54

Mine is another vote for the darker jeans, and I'm guessing the thread is about 50/50 now! They really suit you. I would pair them with a looser cropped top in woven cotton. I agree trainers would look nice, but it's hot so I would wear sandals.

Aluna · 27/07/2026 08:56

OP there’s lots of wide leg jeans with stilettos looks atm you don’t have wear trainers. I don’t personally like them. You could also wear open sandals with heels.

pastadish · 27/07/2026 15:08

The ripped jeans are fine, and they fit you just fine. They can look dated like they do in these photos but that’s not the jeans it’s the whole outfit. Change it up and you’ll look great.
Just like skinny jeans are dated and not in now but if you style them right they won’t look like you’re just back from 2015. One single item of clothing is not dated it’s how you style it all.
Go with the darker jeans, a different top and some pointed shoes or sandals. I rarely wear trainers to a bar as I don’t like them and it can look like I’m trying to be too young.

Just because it's on a fashion site somewhere, doesn't mean you have to follow it! Look carefully at each of those women - forget about whether it's a Kardashian (immediately offputting to me though!), or Rihanna - & think about whether you actually like what they're wearing?? And would you wear it down the pub on a Friday night? And would you remain low-key if you did?!!!

EleanorMc67 · 27/07/2026 15:35

Couldn't find a picture of a black blazer, dark jeans & tee. These jeans are too light, but you get the idea.
