Downstairs windows left open overnight

Came down this morning and partner had gone to bed leaving living room windows wide open . We are about 3 ft from the road . Was annoyed but went upstairs and said you have left windows open . Earlier in year he left car unlocked on road and with keys on seat . If I go to bed before him I want to close windows so sure they are shut but he always says no , he says I said I can’t trust him this morning. I wasn’t shouting and was calm but don’t think it’s unreasonable to always want the windows shut downstairs as anyone could have climbed in . How do we get resolve this ?

I was reading yesterday about the benefits of sash windows........ I hadnt realised their great benefit is a breeze in (hopefully) at the bottom and the hot air thats indoors....... out through the top. Thats clever thinking!
They look beautiful Im sure but yes mega draughty in winter. Being able to lock them in position is a handy feature.

i have sash windows and they v are v all open at the top - In theory someone could climb in but really paranoid to think they actually woild.

My DH has left our doors unlocked so many times, even when the kids were babies. It used to make me really cross. Now I check myself before I go to bed, he gets cross if I close and lock doors and then denies ever forgotting to lock them. I just don’t trust him.

So you have an extra baby that you have to check up on all the time, the one you married.

OP isn't married yet If she ends the relationship, she escapes your fate.

is it terrible I said can’t trust him ? He says that’s awful of me ?

Why is stating the truth awful of you? He's put you and your belongings in danger and you're the awful one? I'd be having a rethink about this one in your shoes.

Or you just close them when you go to bed. I think that’s what most people do.

Do they, even during hot weather? I certainly don't, and it looks like my neighbours don't either.

You leave your ground floor windows open overnight? I’m talking about the big ones, not the small openers at the top.

Do you leave your downstairs windows open three feet from a public path , aren’t you worried about burglars?

Oh the horror of someone climbing into your home through an open window. I’ve been burgled and it’s horrible.

It happened to my parents. The thieves got in via one of those little upper windows (they must have been small and skinny but they did). Stole all sorts of little things and my dad's car keys.....and the car.

All when then they were upstairs asleep. Horrible.

Yes, on the click at the front of the house, wide open at the back on hot nights.

Yes, on their catches. House is a few metres from the pavement, in a large housing estate. No, it's a reasonably safe area and I'm not worried about burglars.

Coralsunset · 18/07/2026 08:01

And if you had been burgled, your insurance probably wouldn’t have paid out!

Eddielizzard · 18/07/2026 08:04

Well you can't trust him to close the windows can you?!

GoodkneeBadKnee · 18/07/2026 08:14

We were burgled while we were asleep upstairs. All windows and doors locked too. I heard a noise, went downstairs to see the front door wide open. The burglar heard me on the stairs and ran out of the living room onto the street.

Downunderduchess · 18/07/2026 08:25

I don’t see how he can be so upset that you said you can’t trust him to close the windows because he DIDN’T close the windows 🤷‍♀️ you are reacting to his behaviour. He’s literally shown you he didn’t close them. And is now trying to make you feel bad.

Divebar2021 · 18/07/2026 08:37

He made a mistake ….. a mistake!!!!. I hit a car in a car park… it was a mistake. Should my husband have left me. He’s previously forgotten to lock the back door. We all make mistakes. No one broke in and no one died

( and I don’t believe you’ve never forgotten something. And if you haven’t just wait til peri menopause and we can revisit this conversation)

lottiegarbanzo · 18/07/2026 08:45

So last person to go upstairs closes windows?

If that doesn’t work when he’s last up, then he’s demonstrated unreliability. Then you set new rules.

Xanhi · 18/07/2026 08:46

I thought everyone did this kind of thing sometimes. Everyone in my family, my colleagues and all my close friends have definitely done things like this.

jackstini · 18/07/2026 08:51

We have all downstairs windows closed, all upstairs ones open

You are not saying you don’t trust him full stop, just that you can’t trust him to shut windows!

He needs to acknowledge he made a mistake which upset you due to security implications

If he’s great apart from this one issue, then just put a nightly routine in place like a pp and do it together
Car locked, keys away
Doors locked, chain on
Windows closed
Lights off

If he’s rubbish at lots of things which are deal breakers for you - then bin him!

Coulddowithanap · 18/07/2026 09:12

I've left the window open downstairs, DH let me know in the morning but didn't make a big thing about it or say I couldn't be trusted.

I've also left my car unlocked once, different time left the window open on my car. Mistakes happen. And as someone mentions above peri menopause has a lot to answer for.

Findyourdomain · 18/07/2026 09:16

I am the only one who locks up at night and if I fall asleep on the sofa they all go upstairs and leave doors unlocked - they are very sheepish the next day when I bring it up, what can you do? I think in your case the doors and windows have to be secure before you go to bed - I would insist upon it.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 18/07/2026 09:19

This should be a thing that the last person to come to bed does this. When my boyfriend stays at mine, if he’s up to bed after me, he does a sweep of the downstairs to ensure windows are closed, back doors locked. It invalidates my insurance if they’re not and someone breaks in. Not had a break in in years but you never know.

professionalcommentreader · 18/07/2026 09:30

I’ve done this, and left the car unlocked. I now have to double check because I can’t trust myself, sometimes I have to get up out of bed to double check so I can go to sleep.

Lifevans · 18/07/2026 12:33

I live in a very nice urban area and only small upper windows are left open downstairs.
Not a chance we would leave the larger ones.
I would be pissed off if husband did and him me.

Living alone does solve these problems if he is a twat.

pillorinjection · 18/07/2026 12:40

Of course you can’t trust him. You wouldn’t be able to trust me either. It’s the kind of thing I don’t do often but maybe once a year or so. I used to drive my husband mad and in the end I left because I dont want to live with someone who is mad at me a lot of the time.

Bonkers1966 · 18/07/2026 12:42

He is not trustworthy. What a prince.
