AIBU to feel miffed about my family getting Irish passports?

AIBU to feel miffed my DH & kids are getting Irish passports? They all have UK passports and it seems a luxury to pay twice.

I can’t get an Irish passport, but my DH and DC’s can. I’ve pointed out I’ll be stuck in the long non-EU queues at airports whilst they go ahead through the EU queue.

Realistically unless any of them travel somewhere alone, it’s highly unlikely they’ll be with other family or friends with Irish passports so they’ll always be waiting on whoever they’re travelling with anyway so what is the point?

DH was very sheepish when a neighbour popped round with the signed forms this evening and was avoiding telling me what he’d dropped round for.

I'm in your exact situation (kids and partner entitled to Irish passports, me no) but I chose Irish passports for the kids. They don't have British ones, but could get them if they wanted to. We live in London. Irish passports cheaper and in my experience quicker to get, and more advantages. I'd love an Irish passport!

Bit racist.
Where do your children live?

Racist how exactly?
My DCs live in England.

Haven’t read the full thread but I am in a similar situation. We travel to Portugal a lot and always went through passport control together despite my U.K. passport. However, I have been told by a friend that this year it’s not possible to.

@Honeysucklelanethey can’t have only Irish passports as you have to travel in and out of the UK on your British passport if you’re a British citizen

Rubbish!!!!!

Looks like a UK national travelling with or to an EU spouse can apply for a family member exemption on the ETIAS when it comes in later this year - although would still need an ETIAS if not travelling with or to the spouse, or if travelling to the spouse’s country of citizenship. Would also need proof of relationship (marriage certificate etc) to show at border control. Also means you’re not restricted by the 90 days in any 180 rule.’

Rubbish!!!!!

The UK and the island of Ireland have a joint agreement so it is possible to travel between the UK and the EU (and back) on an Irish passport.

You assumed wrong. My MIL has lived in the UK since 1968 (and is catholic). She already had what she needed regarding right to freedom of movement but she wanted to fuck up everyone else’s.
My DH got his Irish passport over 20 years ago and hasn’t held a British one for a long time. And thank god he did, because if he hadn’t sorted it out before our DCs were born, the Irish citizenship would have stopped with them.
My DCs have Irish passports now because why the hell should their rights be curtailed because of a group of ignorant fuckwits, and I absolutely include their DGM in that group. I am confident they would have applied at some point as they are very attuned to their Irish roots, preferring to say they are Irish rather than English.

What a selfish & idiotic woman your mil sounds like. She has absolutely no thought to the youth who may want to broaden their horizons. me, me , me mentality . I do think eventually the UK will vote to rejoin the EU (if allowed)

You are anti your mother in law. Anti Catholics. I assume you are slagging off people who voted brexit. You're anti everyone really.

I wasn't aware that brexit was about passports. I thought it was about trade, taxes, the economy and various other factors.

What on earth makes you think I’m anti-catholic?! My DH, DCs and the rest of my family are catholics. It was only mentioned as a PP said Irish Brexit supporters then applying for a passport were loyalist Protestants. I was explaining that wasn’t always the case.
Yes I am absolutely slagging off Brexit supporters who, like my MIL, voted for it to stop immigration pull up the drawbridge she’d very happily walked accross 50yrs earlier.
Not sure how that makes me racist?

What should I be open minded about? I know exactly why my MIL voted for Brexit as she told me. And it sounded very similar to every person I’ve heard taking about it on here, on talk shows, being interviewed by media on general.
So yes I’m pissed off sbout a whole subset of the population, but that doesn’t make me racist.

Dont you remember all the fuss about having a blue passport instead of a burgundy European one. There was also a lot circulating about hypocritical people lobbying for Brexit who immediately got European passports like Nige having a German passport, so still moving freely in Europe. I thought there was also a story that a pro Brexit person was claiming everyone in the UK could automatically get an Irish passport, but I may be misremembering

You are not misremembering it was Tory Brexiteer Andrew Bridgen who made that claim.

Didn’t all that stuff about blue passports come out after Brexit
It wasn't part of the campaign

A lot of people voted on it because of immigration and when that
bus was parked on the forecourt and front page news it was the final nail in the coffin
People didn’t bother to question whether those figures were true or not

this from googling

The return to blue passports was not the reason for the vote, but rather a popular symbolic gesture introduced by the government after the referendum to celebrate leaving.

TBF I was referring to nationalists in Northern Ireland vs unionists, ditto. As the fact that I mentioned passport offices in Belfast and Derry made clear.

I didn’t bother arguing with you at the time, but as you’re still trying to use it to prove something or other about Northern Ireland, I need to point that out.

The Brexit vote in NI split very neatly along sectarian lines. And that was my point.

An anecdote about someone who left the place at the very start of the troubles if not before, and has lived in England ever since, well over half a century ago - is really not relevant to the point I was making.

Unescorted · 17/07/2026 10:35

You will be exempt from the 180 day stay limit if you are travelling with your husband. Take your marriage certificate with and you can stay as long as you like. Days you travel separately will still count to your limit.

Honeysucklelane · 15/07/2026 23:10

Have you read my posts or just jumped to conclusions? I have said several times I’m anxious about being left in a queue alone without my DH or kids. Airports are very busy over crowded places which I’m fine with when I’m with my family / friends.

Luckily some people have commented I can join my family in the EU queue which I didn’t know was possible.

The thing is (if we’re talking about jumping to conclusions) you’re catastrophising a hypothetical scenario that may not even happen. You’re winding yourself up over a passport application (not a new flashy car, £1000 coffee machine), a legal document which they are entitled to. You’re then assuming that they’ll leave you behind. You’re assuming passport control is going to be miles long. You’re riling yourself up over something that hasn’t happened and therefore controlling if they can or can’t get a document produced.

Clearingaspace · 17/07/2026 10:44

@BrownTroutBluesAgain that makes sense actually thinking about it. The passport thing might have dissuaded some people on voting to leave.

As the daughter of an Irish woman and a half Irish father. I can not only get an Irish passport but apparently an Irish pension. I choose not to but my children have applied. It's all perfectly legal.

northernstars · 17/07/2026 15:53

Minasama · 15/07/2026 22:49

I really dislike this “passport shopping.” If you are from the U.K. you are not Irish - presumably your family do not sound Irish or live Irish cultural traditions.
I lived in Germany for years, I never got a passport (pre-Brexit) because as much as I loved the country I very clearly was not German.
I don’t think it should be possible for people who clearly are not a nationality to become that nationality.

I’m from the UK but have lived in Ireland for over 20 years. As such I was not entitled to a vote in the Brexit referendum - which I would have voted against. It’s not as clear cut as you make out.

Only if you’ve worked in Ireland
A pension is based on your contributions, not your parents

Agreed. My parents are Irish based in uk and voted for brexit! But at least I can hopefully apply for passports for myself and my kids - just need to get on with it.

Yeah, so did my mum. Came over here in the 60's, lived here ever since, voted for Brexit. But because of her being born in Ireland, I was automatically an Irish citizen when I was born.... so have an Irish passport as well as UK.

Clearingaspace · 17/07/2026 16:59

@Catinabeanbag I was upset but they genuinely thought it was a good thing and still do.

I am such a procrastinator- I have been talking about applying for the Irish passport for years, I will basically be applying so my kids can have one. Good on the OPs husband for actually getting the process started!
