Do I just go home?

DoIgohome · 15/07/2026 20:18

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

Thanks for the advice all. I won't be saying where I am so move on if that's all you can talk about. Thank you.

Then yes, go home and lose your money You're clearly determined to be miserable and don't actually want help, just attention. I'm sure the place is fine. Maybe do a bit more research next time!

Error404FucksNotFound · 16/07/2026 07:34

Look, the money is gone no matter what you do.
So you either stick it out, miserable and scared, so you don't feel you wasted money, or you call it quits and come home.

I would come home.

Alittlefrustrated · 16/07/2026 07:36

YABU to just go home, withour looking for ways to improve your experience.

What part did you stay in?

We've been a few times and its easily the most interesting city I've ever been to. If you have any interest in history at all, its a truly incredible city to visit.

I agree, loved Berlin - and we had awful weather while there a few years ago.

AlgaeDreams · 16/07/2026 06:07

I hope your bags are packed and you are on the way to the airport.
It's the only way when refusing help whilst staying in an indeterminate city location close to a train station.

Is it Kings Cross London?

Safe travels regardless.

Kings X is very safe these days!!

youngwhippersnapper · 16/07/2026 07:50

Well I think we can see why you’re a solo traveller.

RoseOliviaAu · 16/07/2026 08:00

I’m surprised people have actually left Naples. Sure it’s busy and a bit loud and riotous but it’s also a hell of lot of fun if you get stuck in.

u3ername · 16/07/2026 08:00

bittertwisted · 15/07/2026 21:56

Everyone knows Naples is a rough diamond surely!
i loved it

I suspect the reason op doesn’t want to name the city is because ppl will say ‘what did you expect, everyone knows about X’…

But I’m sure you’ll also get plenty of practical advice, Op.

If you’re in Eastern Europe it may look run down and unpleasant but people have very strong moral compass. Most people will go over and beyond to help you. The Roma begging (and pickpocketing) around the station will be the very worst of it and you just need to keep your wits about it.

MadisonAvenue · 16/07/2026 08:01

Gonners · 15/07/2026 21:54

Can anyone think of a UK city with only one station?

Wolverhampton

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 16/07/2026 08:13

Go home then. Cut your nose to spite your face. You've got loads of people willing to help you but you won't accept that help. Talk about stubborn.

Laurmolonlabe · 16/07/2026 08:17

Why didn't you do some research on the city and read the reviews of the hotel- whenever I travel I always do both and habve never had this situation.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 16/07/2026 08:17

Look OP, it’s not our fault you decided to holiday in Blackpool. Time to do a bit more research next time!

Monty36 · 16/07/2026 08:32

From the information provided I would come home. If you do not want to spend more money to go elsewhere. Chalk it up to experience and reflect on what you would do differently next time in terms of booking a hotel and where etc.
Go home.

Lurkingandlearning · 16/07/2026 08:32

You've tried your best to make it work and as you can't even use the hotel as a base to visit surrounding areas, just go home. You're going to lose money but that money is already gone and wasted, so why add feeling unsafe and unhappy to that.

I've just thought of something that might help for future holidays. Google Street View. As I recall it is almost like walking round an area. I've never done it myself but I think I'll include using that when planning holidays.

She hasn't tried her best to make it work, she hasn't taken any advice at all.
I agree she should just leave. Maybe she's on her way home.

NinjaCoffee · 16/07/2026 08:35

You need to say where you are otherwise people can’t really help and will just say go home if you hate it so much, but what a waste. There must have been something that drew you to it in the first place. If it’s Naples - there is loads to do and it’s actually an amazing city! But just say and we can help!

Edited to say if you are refusing to say where you are I don’t really see the point in this post but just go home!

Bumcake · 16/07/2026 08:36

You’re determined not to make the best of it, so go home. The money’s wasted either way.

This is what I was going to ask; most of Italy is a shithole to be fair. Not just Rome.

You are wrong.
Italy is a stunningly fabulous country.

Everywheee has its crappy side.
Anyone been to London recently. Now thats a dump.
It also has the most amazing places to see and eat and be.

OP is being rediculous.

Todayismyfavouriteday · 16/07/2026 08:43

The OP is either too sheltered, spoiled, or a millennial snowflake! All cities have rough areas. Perhaps go home, relax in your lounge with a cup of tea, and next time maybe book a nice hotel in a nearby city, where everything's nice and familiar.

Shedmistress · 16/07/2026 08:45

Rome though. What a fucking waste of all that culture.

SinicalMe · 16/07/2026 08:45

£1.5k for a European City break for 1 person in a grotty hotel. You was robbed. Confused

SowWhatNow · 16/07/2026 08:51

@DoIgohome where in the world did you wake up this morning? Somewhere new and exciting I hope!

grapesstrawberriespleass · 16/07/2026 08:56

I’ve gotta say it. There’s some proper weirdos on MN. Writes a whole post about hating their current city location asking for advice, but won’t say where they are so people who know the city can offer them actual advice that will help salvage a £1.5k holiday? You’re in a huge city, no one is going to be able to track you down or even possess the desire to figure out your exact location, board a plane and seek you out lol. Most pointless post of all. How can people offer any meaningful practical advice if you’re playing where’s wally?

It’s like me posting asking for help styling a certain pair of shoes, but when someone asks to see the shoes I say “oh I’d rather not share” 😂😂😂

limetrees32 · 16/07/2026 08:56

I'm more interested in why the OP won't be naming the location .
I'm not bothered about where it actually is .

RampantIvy · 16/07/2026 08:57

DoIgohome · 15/07/2026 20:49

Thanks for the advice all. I won't be saying where I am so move on if that's all you can talk about. Thank you.

I'm not sure what you hoped to achieve by posting on here if you won't let anyone help you by not saying where you are.
Your options are:

  1. Stay and make yourself miserable
  2. Stay and make the best of it by getting the hotel to organise taxis/Ubers for you
  3. Cut your losses and go home early
  4. Book another hotel at great expense
