Do I just go home?

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

This is what I was going to ask; most of Italy is a shithole to be fair. Not just Rome.

Can’t imagine how anyone could spend £1500 on a trip to Naples.
Loads of flights - easy to get there and back for less than £200. Accommodation in a decent hotel £80 a night…

No, most of Italy is not a shit hole. It can be crowded and hot in summer but it’s still very beautiful with amazing food.

I’m really confused, where are you? Did you not research the area before you went? Also £1500 for one person is expensive, Ive just been to Croatia bed & breakfast, jet2 for way less than that!

Surely you can Google the area and find some things to do?

Look up if there are any house/pet sitting opportunities there for the next few days.

Take taxis to and from a safer hub every day. Just come home via taxi each evening to sleep. V

Confine your travel to daylight hours; walk with confidence and look like you know exactly where you're going.

But it's really hard o advise when you don't say where you are. It's not going to out you.

Sure, as it would obviously be identifying. No one else from UK could possibly be there and you don’t want to out yourself😂.

My bets on Paris.

If the trip isn't as advertised then you are entitled to a refund or a hotel move. Get everything you can in writing about raising the issues with the booking company. If they still won't do anything, seek a refund through your credit card - if you paid that way or even travel insurance?

C'mon OP, all cities have rough areas. Catch a bus or train, go sightseeing, go to a museum. Europe is full of art and history, and there are lovely areas in any European city you happen to be in. I've travelled solo many times in most European cities, and there's always a rough area anywhere you go. Spend the day outside, and catch a taxi back to the hotel to sleep. Don't be such a snowflake.

Areas of Madrid can be like this too.

Since OP isn't going to say where it is, this is a pretty pointless thread. It's well known that the area round the station in most European cities is usually on the rougher side. Did you not research the hotel location before booking?

I agree, we had a lovely time there.

I hope your bags are packed and you are on the way to the airport.
It's the only way when refusing help whilst staying in an indeterminate city location close to a train station.

Malaga is tacky, it’s not dangerous. So unlikely to be Malaga.

Be v careful about booking.com just had a cancellation 24 hours before I arrive. Left me high and dry and they won't help. I would walk to a nice part of town look for a small hotel and check it out on its own website - see if you can afford it.

I doubt she'll walk anywhere.

What a silly idea to start a thread moaning about your mystery destination and when some helpful people ask where you are so that they can suggest ideas to actually improve the situation you refuse to give them that significant piece of information.

Maybe use the time whilst you are holed up to examine why you would prefer to wallow rather than finding a solution.

I'd just get a flight home OP and do it before all the evil mumsnetters work out what city you're in and find you amongst millions of people

Chat GPT will tell you restaurants near your hotel. You only need to be in the hotel to sleep. Make a plan for each day and go out and see the better parts of the city.

Yeah, as someone else said, just go home, draw a line under it and dont think about it. Just do some nice but cheap things at home. Ive always found when something really isnt working that voting with your feet is a good tactic, so long as you replace the problem with something positive. Dont dwell.

if you won’t tell us where you are op then I’d say uber (or I’ve found Bolt to be better in parts of Eastern Europe) is your friend. Pick up at the hotel, uber to somewhere nicer in town. There’s always somewhere nicer, even if it’s only a cafe on the main square for a beer / coffee / ice cream to watch the world go by, that’s better than most things.
