Only like the expensive dresses! how much did you spend and do you regret it?

OP posts:

I (my parents) spent £2000 on mine 15 years ago. I then spent £300 on alterations. My wedding cost a lot overall (by my standards), I don’t regret any of it. It’s “only one day” but it really was my favourite day of ever.
Whatever you choose @perpetius I hope you feel amazing.

essgee91 · 07/06/2026 10:17

I’m an ex bridal stylist - if you want to send me a photo of the dress I can see if I can find you alternatives at a lower price point?

yonem · 07/06/2026 10:17

Around £800 last year. I originally wanted to spend less and while I don’t regret it I definitely wouldn’t have spent more. It got muddy and a little torn during our outside photos and dancing and I think if it had cost thousands I would have been too worried about damaging it to enjoy it fully.

Mine was £150 from BHS in 2001. BHS did great wedding outfits back in the day, it was a bias cut (I had a flat tummy then) lacey dress with a puddle train and I loved it. I’d tried on a few from wedding dress shops and not liked any of them. Cake was from M&S, a friend did flowers, we had no money, but it was a lovely day.

PenandPip · 07/06/2026 10:25

€1450 in 2007. Seemed about average at the time. I didn't have a budget.

PatNoodle · 07/06/2026 10:30

I got a Stella York dress in a sample sale a few years ago. Should have been £2750 but I got it for £500 including the veil. Obviously meant I had to have it in the only size available and then pay for alterations myself, but that only cost about £90 with a local seamstress

MerryStork · 07/06/2026 10:32

10 pounds in the sale! It obviously wasn’t a traditional wedding dress, it was a ivory mini dress with a gorgeous lacy overlay! I wasn’t looking to spend so little I’d tried on more expensive but really loved the cheaper one! We had only a small do so it was the perfect dress for that!

chichiwaaa · 07/06/2026 10:34

I married 15 years ago and my dress was on sale from £1000 to £200. I’d have paid the £1000 because I loved it. It went up the loft after the wedding and I’ve never seen it since.
I felt a million bucks on my wedding day.

notacooldad · 07/06/2026 10:34

I was going through my more militant feminist era and refused a dress,a wedding ring and a walk down the aisle and wore a trouser suit which cost £400 in 1997.
I still love it. The trousers are a bit tight these days though!

MightyGoldBear · 07/06/2026 10:38

£12 do I win the race to the bottom 🤣

If you can afford it go for it op!

2chocolateoranges · 07/06/2026 10:42

Mine was £250 plus alterations and that was in the year 2000, mine was actually a gold silk bridesmaid dress as I didn’t want a white, sparkly, pearly , beady normal wedding dress!

loved it and don’t regret not spending more or going for a normal wedding dress.

Jasmin71 · 07/06/2026 10:43

£600 in 2000

twirlypoo · 07/06/2026 10:44

£3500 - I actually didn’t like it but was so sick of trying on dresses it was the best option at the time. I showed my husband before the wedding as I really wasn’t sure I should wear it, but he loved it so that was the main thing. It didn’t feel like “me” and I regret not pushing through and finding something I really loved.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 10:44

@2chocolateoranges Just been shopping with dd for wedding dresses and you will be pleased to know there’s plenty that are nothing like you describe. Plenty use plain fabric and use cut and design to be flattering.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/06/2026 10:47

Mine was £150 in 1985. The wedding itself (excluding the dress) cost £1000 so in relative terms it was probably quite expensive.

ShyGirl32 · 07/06/2026 10:49

My SIL spent £5000 on her outfit 20 years ago (hand-made dress from a London designer with a trail of Swarovski crystals); veil; shoes. Then hair, tanning parlour, makeup.

She got married in a boutique designer hotel so the dress “fit” and it was a very swanky black tie wedding that went in all day and ended at 5am.

It was absolutely the most fabulous wedding I ever went to, bride looked gorgeous.

She had an affair and divorced my DB 10 years later, but the wedding was amazing.

DB was minted, by the way, so money was no object.

£100. I know you said only expensive dresses, but I wasn't aiming for a cheap dress, I just wanted a sleek, 1940's style dress. I went in a few wedding dress shops (extremely annoying, as 2 of the three insisted you had to book an appointment just to look at their stock; none of which were suitable) and was considering buying one online, but the company wouldn't publish pictures of the back! (It was a designer, but cheap designer, not Vera Wang level; but they claimed they wouldn't show pictures of the whole dress as they didn't want people copying it.) A couple of weeks before the wedding, I went into a vintage shop and found the perfect dress. Needed some pin tucks around the bust, which cost £10 from a tailor.

ilovemynails · 07/06/2026 10:55

£49.50 + £3 for alterations. 1979. It's just been redesigned for my granddaughter.
Which has cost £400.

Iloveeverycat · 07/06/2026 10:58

£245. from liberty London in 91

soddingspiderseason · 07/06/2026 11:01

£200 about 25 years ago. I got a full length simple, silk dress with pretty spaghetti straps in an off white in the sale in a medium range shop. Very simple but looked great.

RS1987 · 07/06/2026 11:03

£1500 in 2013 and yes, I think I could have looked just as good at a fraction of the price.

Iamacatslave · 07/06/2026 11:06

£5k in 2002. Designed and made by Sharon Cunningham.

hellospring26 · 07/06/2026 11:11

£500 plus alterations back in 2008. I paid a fortune to get it cleaned and packed and sold it on eBay for £90. Currrmtly going through divorce so glad I didn’t spend a fortune!

Snackpocket · 07/06/2026 11:17

£1000 in 2011, plus a bit extra for alterations. Do I regret it? No, I loved my wedding dress, it was fabulous. Would I spend the same if I was getting married now? Maybe, but I think there are more and better cheaper dresses than there were 15 years ago. If you can afford it, then go for it. You don’t get many opportunities to wear a wedding dress!

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 11:21

Yes, you can afford it, @perpetius. (And you can sell it on afterwards if you want.)

But I cannot imagine asking MN about a £3,500 dress.
