Why only expensive wedding dress responses?

Besidemyselfwithworry · 06/06/2026 22:58

I’m not married but my sister hired an “expensive” dress it cost £400 to hire but she wasn’t the first and won’t be the last but being as it would then have been shoved in her loft and never seen the light of day again, she thought it seemed a sensible option.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 06/06/2026 22:59

Wasn’t the first and wouldn’t be the last to wear it
but did the trick on the day
looked great on the photos
job done

RaraRachael · 06/06/2026 23:06

Mine was cheap shite because I was too mean to part with a lot of money but my friend's one cost £450 back in 1983 - not sure what that equates to nowadays

TheyGrewUp · 06/06/2026 23:08

£750. In 1991. For its time it was very simple. I don't regret a penny of it. It made me feel comfy and was easy to wear. About a month ago it went to the charity shop.

Arynaa · 06/06/2026 23:15

About £1,300 in 2012 plus £150 for alterations. I dont regret it but it does seem a ridiculous amount of money now.

perpetius · 06/06/2026 23:17

@EmeraldShamrock000 no I only seem to like expensive dresses and I'm struggling to decide how much to spend. I originally thought I would get a second hand or vinted buy but I also have never really felt that pretty, until I tried on an expensive wedding dress. I have never felt like that. Just the idea of it being inexpensive or second hand on my wedding day isn't giving me that wow factor. I'm really surprised it's so out of character for me.

£900 plus alterations in 2008.

Holesinsnow · 06/06/2026 23:29

£800 in 2017, second hand via still white website. It was 3k new. Sold it on for £500.

Don't regret it.

cupfinalchaos · 06/06/2026 23:29

She said she only likes expensive wedding dresses, not only respond with expensive dresses.

although if she had it might have stopped the inevitable posts from women saying they wed in their work clothes, threadbare and stained and whywouldanyonebuyaweddingdresshowcrass attitude

Gealach · 06/06/2026 23:32

I spent 800 euro. It was from a charity shop, a very expensive dress that had been used as a sample in shop previously. I spent quite a lot on alterations, another 250 I think. But it was a good solution to get a fabulous dress for less.

PermanentTemporary · 06/06/2026 23:32

£600 in 1995 (outfit from Harvey Nicks)
£550 in 2003 (dressmaker)
£1500 this year (dress from Net a Porter)

It adds up, they were all expensive.

Can you hire an expensive one? You only get married once (hopefully) so go for an expensive one if it makes you happy. It will be be left in the attic. If you can afford it then why not?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/06/2026 23:35

@perpetius Not sure what you call expensive. DD is having 2 gowns. One £2600 and one £1200 plus alterations.

😅 true.
The race to the thrifty bottom.

suki1964 · 06/06/2026 23:36

£90

In the sale, Precise Petites

Worn twice after and just sold on Vinted for £20 - a pure bargain :)

perpetius · 06/06/2026 23:37

That is expensive. 🫣 enjoy.

The only real issue is can you afford the dress you want. What other people paid for theirs this year, ten years ago, fifty years aho doesn't mean anything.

NameChangeForTheWeek · 06/06/2026 23:42

£3200

if you can easily afford it go ahead. If it’s hard for you to afford it I’d honestly think twice. My wealthy in-laws paid for our very expensive wedding venue. We were pinching the pennies otherwise at the time, as neither of us has stable jobs, a friend did the photos, another the flowers, someone else the cake, I had the second hand dress. And honestly I think all the guests attending didn’t realise the massive gap in opulence between the venue and the details.

It’s one day. It’s not worth financial stress.

maudelovesharold · 06/06/2026 23:44

Hired it for £150 in 1993. Never regretted not buying one, either!

FairyBatman · 06/06/2026 23:45

£325 in 2003 but it was half price in a sale.

perpetius · 06/06/2026 23:45

I won't go into dept for it, I have savings, I just know they could be way better spent. I also know that I woudl regret it both ways. Regret not feeling amazing on my wedding day and regret spending so much on a dress.

I have heard horror stories from rentals- the previous wearer returning it late so the dress getting cancelled, and the dress arriving and being poor quality.
