I got mine in a sale shop of a big wedding store, €500 and I passed it to Oxfam years later so someone else would get to find their dream ball gown wedding dress.

If you can afford it, go for the expensive one. If it's a stretch or is going to mean you have less money for the honeymoon or paying your bills, then it's probably not worth it.

I paid 650 for my dress about 20 years ago. It was regarded as mid-price at that time. I paid a bit more in addition to that for a veil and alterations. It was a stretch for me at the time as we were only in our mid-20s but I don't regret it. My dress was perfect.

I was married 15yrs ago and mine is a Maggie Sottero dress. No idea if her styles are still around, if they are cheap/expensive, but at the time it was about £2,000 (not sure what that would be now?). I bought the exact dress from ebay for about £400. The bride hadn't altered the dress as she'd planned to re sell it and it was perfect.

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 07/06/2026 00:00

£1200 in 2008

Myotherusernameisshy · 07/06/2026 00:02

£750 20 years ago. It felt expensive to me at the time. I loved it on the day but then when I was penny pinching on maternity leave a year later I regretted spending so much on a dress for one day.

MrsOfButt · 07/06/2026 00:02

£40. It wasn’t a “wedding dress” but it was MY wedding dress.

Beachforever · 07/06/2026 00:03

Rosa Clara - think it was around £2.5k back in 2007.

I don’t regret it, I loved it and looked amazing!

stayathomegardener · 07/06/2026 00:04

£1,600 in 1995 and it got ruined in the most perfect way almost immediately, Father in law signed the register, blotted my Mothers signature and then held my hand during the photograph outside the church… permanent ink all down the front.

Els1e · 07/06/2026 00:04

£400. In 1992. But it doesn't really matter. If you can afford the gown you crave, buy it.

1989STAR · 07/06/2026 00:05

I really don't understand how to figure out whether I can afford it or not.

If you have £40k in savings after the wedding budget, but plan on going on TTC the night of the wedding when you're self employed so no mat leave, can you afford it?

Have you seen one you like, OP?

Bravemama · 07/06/2026 00:13

Saw it when I was just online browsing for fun in 2008, brand new with tags online. My jaw dropped twice, first when I saw it - I just was absolutely lost for words because it was honestly the most incredible gown I had ever seen. Gush - sorry! And a 2nd time when I saw the price. £39.99. The company was being liquidated and had to sell everything. So with a few clicks of a mouse it was mine! I kept it for years and finally got to wear it in 2015 when I married Mr. Right. 😊

whatifs1 · 07/06/2026 00:13

What is your definition of expensive?

I purchased an ex sample dress, should have been £1970 I paid £250 for it. I adore it. It’s by Allure Bridal. 😌

Onacuctustree · 07/06/2026 00:14

£180 .
It was from Monsoon.
My daughter wore it to her prom.
No regrets. I loved it.

MJFEB2026 · 07/06/2026 00:15

£825 15 years ago!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 00:17

@perpetius My dd is self employed too. I’m paying for the “main” dress. She’s paying for the other dress. I’m supplying veil and jewellery. She’s got savings but I’m not sure of the amount and pays into a pension. You can get used dresses. Something might work for you if you need to save money and you could look at John Lewis off the peg. My DDs is bespoke measurements but we need to get it shortened.

Anxioustealady · 07/06/2026 00:23

£1.6k a couple years ago plus alterations (£250)

It's an insane amount of money to spend on a dress, but I don't regret it because I went dress shopping and I felt so hideous I thought I can't get married. Then I found a dress online I liked, found a supplier with one in stock and it fit almost perfectly and I felt confident and beautiful, and that was worth it for me.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/06/2026 00:28

£180 from Monsoon in 2009
don’t regret it at all
its possible that you might want to extend mat leave or return to work part time so you may be glad of extra funds - only you know.

holidaymay · 07/06/2026 00:29

£4,500. For a dress that I felt a million dollars in. On one day, never to be worn again.

loved the dress. Don’t regret spending the money on it. I could afford it so why not.

@EmeraldShamrock000 no I only seem to like expensive dresses and I'm struggling to decide how much to spend. I originally thought I would get a second hand or vinted buy but I also have never really felt that pretty, until I tried on an expensive wedding dress. I have never felt like that. Just the idea of it being inexpensive or second hand on my wedding day isn't giving me that wow factor. I'm really surprised it's so out of character for me.

Which part of the uk are you in?

perpetius · 07/06/2026 00:43

@Besidemyselfwithworry berwick upon tweed
