Lifting support thread 2

RayKray · 29/05/2023 17:20

Just noticed I was the last to post on the lifting support thread as it went to 1k so here's another.

Original thread intro post here from
@Work2live

"Thought I’d start this thread as a few people thought it’d be a good idea.

"It might be a nice place to support each other and talk about lifting in general, ask for tips and advice on workouts, how to get enough protein etc.

"All levels very much welcome, from complete newbies to those who’ve been weightlifting for years! 💪🏼"

I got the gren light from my physio to add bench and deadlift back into my training!! So excited.

Still need to work on a few rehab things but so glad I can get back to my normal SBD style training. Missed it so much!

RayKray · 09/05/2024 19:02

That's great news @everycowandagain and thanks for the recommendation @PoochiesPinkEars . Do you lift too?

I had a listen to those podcasts today, thanks @PoochiesPinkEars. I loved Fern Brady jumping on too, she's fab.

Great news @everycowandagain! I've completed my third strength session of the week, the new SBTD cycle is more focused on the big lifts and I've loved it. Well, I say I loved it, I dragged myself through yesterday's workout but that's because I was hormonal and everything hurt. But today was much better.

I've started using heavier weights on some accessories since getting used to them, such as DB Bulgarian split squats and DB Romanian deadlifts. Only my adjustable dumbbells have pretty thick handles so I'm really working my grip strength now!

PoochiesPinkEars · 09/05/2024 23:10

@RayKray no, but I do building work so I like being strong (always have actually) and heft stuff around a lot. 😁 I'd quite like to get into weight training at some point but now isn't the right time for me.

@Proteinpud glad you liked them! Maybe you'd also like this one then (if your haven't already heard it): https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m00100hd?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

Also huge fan of Fern Brady. 🙌

Really enjoying this right now, so thought I'd leave it here - think it might be good listening for you!

@PoochiesPinkEars thank you, I really enjoyed these! Got some funny looks laughing to myself on the train!

everycowandagain · 10/05/2024 06:57

@Proteinpud that new SBTD cycle does look good, I follow her on Insta.

RayKray · 10/05/2024 07:02

Oh stronger by the day! I am so stupid sometimes. I totally know this, follow friends that use it, but I kept reading your SBTD as squat, bench, something mysterious beginning with T, deadlift! When you mentioned Deadlift Queen I thought what a confidence as that's what Meg stronger by the day was posting about 😂

It's the new compulsory Tumbling sequence they have added as a mandatory component of powerlifting comps @RayKray, I hope you're working on yours!!

(God forbid...)

@PoochiesPinkEars thank you, I really enjoyed these! Got some funny looks laughing to myself on the train!

Fun image, glad to have given a good thing... Had to share, let's face it comedy about female weight training doesn't grow on trees. 🤣

Proteinpud · 10/05/2024 08:34

@RayKray Squat, Bench, Trenbolone, Deadlift obviously....
Tbf I sometimes do a double take when I see SBD now!

The routine included deficit deadlifts on Monday and I've not tried them before (weight was intentionally lighter) Was odd that after doing them once, regular DL yesterday felt different (in a good way). Apparently it will build up to a 1RM test in July, it's nice to have a timeline to work towards.

MsMartini · 10/05/2024 22:12

😂@everycowandagain you've made me lol.

everycowandagain · 13/05/2024 07:40

I deadlifted yesterday for the first time in 5 weeks!! Only did 50kg (although my coach made me do TEN reps!!). It felt good to be back.

I also squatted, they were tough because I am in a deficit and hadn't eaten enough before my session. I need to start timing my carbs around my training a bit more, for the duration of my cut.

MsMartini · 13/05/2024 08:21

Yayyy @everycowandagain , that must have felt great!

My core is aching today after PT yesterday - we did "sit up straights" after some neck reps while in a hollow body position. I won't be laughing much today 😀. Does anyone else do them?

Did a few pull ups (very slight twinge) and bar dips (absolutely fine) as well as push ups, bench dips and inverted rows, and elbow no worse today so I am going to carry on training around it (but no boxing).

everycowandagain · 13/05/2024 13:46

@MsMartini I can't even do a sit up, never mind whatever a sit up straight is! I am the least 'functional' athlete ever. I stick to hollow body holds.

Glad the elbow is allowing you to do some things.

Proteinpud · 13/05/2024 17:17

@MsMartini are they the same as V ups? I've done V sit holds but not sure I'd want to try a sit up variety!

@everycowandagain congrats for getting back to deadlifts!

My calorie counting isn't going well but I just upped my training max for OHP for the second week in a row so I'm going to enjoy that instead!

MsMartini · 14/05/2024 10:19

A "sit-up straight" is where you are in HB position but with your hands at the sides of your head and you do a sit up while flapping your arms in and out like chicken wings, returning to elbows out at the top (so elbows narrowest at the mid point), then flap again on the way down. feet off ground throughout. Impossible to describe (and I can't find a video) 😀. Not sure there is anything especially functional about them unless your aim is to amuse innocent bystanders 😂.

Take the win @Proteinpud 😀

Proteinpud · 14/05/2024 21:59

Ooh that sounds horrible @MsMartini ! Similar to a V up then, which sounds the same moment but arms stretched overhead. Makes my quads cramp just thinking about it.

And yeah, I'm taking the win. Work is stressful this week so perhaps it might be time for a dirty bulk instead 😂

YourPithyLilacSheep · 15/05/2024 15:28

NC but regular (I've been away). Lifting is going really well - I had a knee cartilage injury which is now pretty much OK (it's only been a year!) and I was back to squatting but gosh, sets of reps at 45 kilos had me exhausted! I like squatting, but deadlifting is my love - pulled another 100 kilos the other week.

My big achievement in training is that I climbed a rope in the gym up to the roof. I've never done it in my entire 65 years! I was so so excited!

YourPithyLilacSheep · 15/05/2024 15:31

everycowandagain · 10/05/2024 06:57

@Proteinpud that new SBTD cycle does look good, I follow her on Insta.

I use the SBTD programming in days in between my PT sessions, and when I'm travelling. I'll be away for about 6 weeks for work over the summer & SBTD is worth the (very reasonable) annual sub just for that.

everycowandagain · 15/05/2024 16:00

Not sure I would manage that @MsMartini I once had my coach in fits of laughter watching me attempt (and fail!) a normal sit up. I don't even have a particularly weak core, I have just never been able to do them!

I am gradually rehabbing my wrist injury, I did some sumo deadlifts yesterday and kept it fairly light, pain free but the bar was slipping out of my injured hand a bit so I need to rebuild some grip strength.

everycowandagain · 15/05/2024 16:00

@YourPithyLilacSheep good job on the rope climb! That's some impressive strength!

YourPithyLilacSheep · 15/05/2024 16:29

It's not so much strength as abs and hip flexors. Several years of doing hollow holds - holding for up to a minute.

MsMartini · 15/05/2024 17:53

Wow @YourPithyLilacSheep , did it hurt your hands? That's amazing!

@everycowandagain , great feeling isn't it when an injury recedes and something that hurt now doesn't?

everycowandagain · 15/05/2024 18:31

@MsMartini I am so happy to once again be able to pick up heavy things and put them back down again!!

Work2live · 15/05/2024 18:54

Posting for the first time in forever! Great to see these threads going strong (pardon the pun) 😂

So great to read about everyone’s progress and all the different types of training people are doing.

It’s also comforting to hear about other’s injury challenges. I’ve been struggling with an injury for a while and am about to start rehab in the hopes of getting back to full fitness within the next few months. In the meantime it’s been lots of upper body for me!
