Some strange things this week. Toys misbehaving.

I’ve never experienced anything ‘woo’- other people in my family have told me stories but I’ve never had anything happen to me.
However, there have been a couple of things this week:
A few nights ago, one of my toddler’s toys randomly started playing. It’s one where you have to turn a wheel to make it go, then it plays music.

I didn’t think much of it, but a day or 2 later, my mum and I were chatting in my living room, while the kids were napping, and a different toy started making noises. It’s a teddy that you have to squeeze to get it to play, it hadn’t gone off before and suddenly started going. It stopped after about a minute. 20 minutes later, when my mum went upstairs to fetch my toddler, I jokingly said ‘So is anyone here then?’ And it started cycling through the noises really quickly, as if responding.

Finally, yesterday, my mum and I were again chatting in the living room at nap time and the first musical toy just played a tiny bit and stopped quickly. It was so quick, I didn’t even notice, but my mum stopped talking and then I realised what had happened.

Coincidences? Or something else? Hoping someone ‘woo’ can give an insight too.

Do they have on/off switches?
Some toys are designed to make their noise to remind you that you've left it switched on if it's not played with for a while.

Needmorelego · 19/08/2025 11:25

Or if they are designed to respond to movement they can sometimes start up due to someone just walking past.

The musical one does - it’s switched to ‘on’ so that could definitely explain that. The teddy hasn’t for an on/off switch and nothing was moving so that wouldn’t apply there.

Batteries are running out probably. I have had this with toys

There are several rational explanations already given. We once had a toddler puzzle, the type that when you took out the puzzle piece shaped like a cow it would moo etc. It started going off, with no one near it, downstairs in the middle of the night, and it sounded like lost souls moaning in the dark, especially when I was home alone with baby DS. Turned out it was light activated, and moonlight coming through was sometimes strong enough to set it off, or the fridge light.

Ooh there’s an Uncanny podcast episode about a similar thing. Personally I think it is creepy and paranormal but of course lots don’t, I think it was explained with pent up kinetic energy and/or batteries running out.

God that sounds utterly terrifying 🙈🤣 but I’m glad there was a rational explanation. Yes, it could easily be the batteries in the teddy. Just a coincidence. Why are toys randomly bursting into song/noise infinitely creepier than anything else? 😆

When our daughter was young she brought a doll down in the night and said “ I don’t want this it keeps talking” I said “ don’t be silly it just cries” As she walked off looking at the doll warily it suddenly said in a creepy drawl “ batteries all gone”
No wonder it scared her! Not sure who thought that was a good idea! Freaked us all out.
Probably batteries as a PP suggested.

Definitely do NOT listen to an Uncanny podcast episode about the kids' toy phone...! (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001slfz"

We had something similar one Christmas, a toy engine that flashed when it was pushed along. And then started flashing on its own at night. And then started flashing in response to DH asking it questions. I did not get involved!!

Haha no I’m still a bit freaked out but less so after the rational explanations. If I listen to a podcast about it, I may never sleep again 😂
