National Trust ghosts…

I was just waiting to pay in my local NT shop the other day, when 2 women who were paying asked the woman behind the counter whether the house (a large 17thC one) was haunted.

She replied that various staff had now and then felt ‘vibes’, but more specifically, that a visitor once remarked how nice it was that they had people in appropriate period costume walking around.

Except that they had no staff doing any such thing!

Also, one of the staff who was leading a tour, was once standing alone in a gallery, speaking to visitors below, when he felt a violent push in his back.
There was nobody anywhere near him.

I will not be going inside that house again! Though I only ever did so once, ages ago. Now I just go for the gardens, cafe etc. Personally I find it a rather an ugly-looking house anyway.

The woman serving in the shop added that they used to do ghost tours, but they’d stopped a while ago.

Which house was this?!

Oneearringlost · 20/10/2024 16:21

There is a National Trust card game we used to play as a family, when the children were young, and they knew each ghost and which house.
Our experience has been, though, that NT staff have actively eschewed talking about the ghosts associated with the houses we've visited, almost, in a curmudgeonly way, as they feel it detracts from the more 'wholesome' history that we should all be fascinated with.
Such a shame...a little frisson or shiver can make an experience much more palatable especially with children.
Sorry, I realise, I've completely missed the point!

Which house please

Which house? I'd like to go 👻

Think it's well known for being creepy.

Screamingabdabz · 27/10/2024 20:53

Funny how old houses always have ghosts but hospitals, where people die all the time, not so much!

AChangeIsAsGood · 27/10/2024 21:00

I was told by a member of staff there that the dog of the first owner regularly appears on a flight of stairs at Ham House. Haven't seen it myself!

OverthinkingOlive · 27/10/2024 21:03

I massively believe in ghosts and the paranormal but how come they're never wearing Nike tracksuits etc?!

Erm... I don't think that's true, search for nursing ghost stories. Most hospitals (and medical professionals) have an unexplained story or two!

Not NT but I went on a ghost tour of an English Heritage property today, and the guide said that there's one property where they've had to add a drop-down to the "reasons for leaving" question on the staff exit survey - of "paranormal activity" 👻

ChocolateCroissantCafe · 27/10/2024 21:06

Wonder how many instances there have been that they've had to add it to the survey!

Those who are interested, if you haven't already got it, National Trust brought a new ghost book out in the past year or so. They had one ages ago, I think? MIL has a copy of the new one and from what I've seen, there's quite a lot in it.

MerlinsBeard87 · 27/10/2024 21:44

I have lived in and worked in national trust properties. Many times I would be the only one there in winter if property was closed due to bad weather. I don't believe in ghosts but I have seen and heard things I can't explain

Maybe some do and we don't realise because they just look solid and because they're dressed in modern clothes we don't register they're there?!

Elphame · 01/11/2024 21:13

The NT are really squeamish when it comes to the occult history of their properties.

Tredegar house in South Wales has an alcove blocked off. The story goes that ‘black magic’ rites were performed in there. When it was under council ownership the volunteers would talk about it freely. The NT though have airbrushed it away.

There was evidence of ceremonial magic being performed in Snowshill but again, thats never mentioned and there is no access to the room. Whether the circle and occult markings and regalia are still in situ I don’t know.

There are many more!

There are certainly stories of ghosts or unexplained happenings in hospitals. Just Google it or search here.

Because it doesn’t occur to anyone who sees them that anyone in a tracksuit could be a ghost?
