Ouija board

I'd love to hear from people that have done one, what happened?

I wouldn't ever do one but I can't get over always thinking that somebody in the group must be pushing the arrow instead of it "guiding" you

When I was about fifteen a girl in my Science class suddenly stood up and started screaming. It turned out that she'd done a ouija board a few days before and had seen something/somebody in the classroom and then freaked out

I think there's certain things you shouldn't mess with and that this is one of them. Too big a risk

I remember in primary school kids were supposedly doing one in the art cupboard. When they came out they found "yes, no, yes, yes, no" etc printed on the computer paper! So weird and creepy!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/09/2023 11:30

This was a craze back when I was a teenager. I did one and nothing happened apart from maybe spelling out the odd name or word. Friends did others and something did happen more spooky.

I personally wouldn’t mess with them but I really don’t think you can communicate with the dead.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/09/2023 11:39

Re messing with things you don’t understand. Not me and I can’t quite recall the story but DM in teens or 20s probably messed around with something. So one night she’s asleep in bed and heard voices, a man’s voice. Saying awful things and swearing. Happens whilst she’s visiting eg her DM. Her DF’s gold cross he wore through WW2 suddenly went missing. She couldn’t sleep and her best male friend bought her a floral silver Victorian cross and stayed with her a few nights for protection. After a few months it went away. she was living in a flat share in king or kingly street so either Covent garden or off regent street.

Fast forward a few years, her best friend in Australia died and a mutual friend of theirs came to stay. I was visiting for the weekend too.

So DM and friend were talking about past times and friend said “did you ever live in king/kingly street?” DM said yes. Friend says:-

“one night we were there at night and suddenly saw a skirt long and with black white striped at bottom go past or through the room, very strange. They went into the next bedroom and saw the woman in there shivering and scared and backed right up against the wall. No drink or drugs had been taken.

We were friendly with a local young male policeman and mentioned this to him. He said he’d look into any cases or mysteries and found out a woman had been murdered in that house.”

DM had never told anyone her story but after this they were both convinced this was the same thing they’d both experienced but in different ways.

I did one at school with some friends. It has just started 'working' when there was a weird electric crackling sound in the classroom and then the fire alarm went off (apparently unplanned). We hid it and it then went missing - turned up about a year later in a totally different place.

Ouija board
dontletsaskforthemoon · 12/09/2023 12:54

Ex-bf parents did a Ouija board when they first married so back in the 70s. They lived in a flat where one room was icy cold and they never used it as they felt creeped out by it but they did the Ouija board and they were both so terrified after using it that they went to church twice a week. They were still avid church goers when I knew them in the 90s. My ex said they never spoke about the details other than his Mum felt a physical 'something' around her with a horrible voice. It just felt evil.

DragonScreeches · 12/09/2023 13:04

Did it as a teenager in my house with three friends several times. We got the same "spirit" each time and a whole backstory came out. I am sure someone was pushing the glass, but it scared me and I couldn't be alone in the room we did it in for a while. I don't believe in spirits or anything like that, but there is something about Ouija boards that makes me feel they shouldn't be messed with.

Limetreee · 12/09/2023 13:07

Hi yes we, as a group of six messed about with one. All teenagers, whilst my parents were out.
We had a few nonsense messages then all of a sudden the glass flew off the table with huge force and smashed into the electric fire, we were all really shocked, My mum wasn’t impressed as it had scratched her new fire. We never did it again, or spoke about it.

Foggyfoggyfoggy · 12/09/2023 13:10

No way never..
Ever ever.
About a decade ago we moved to an old farmhouse.. Ds wanted to kit out one of the rooms as a bar. Left him to it tbh. He sourced all sorts of stuff including an old till. A plug in one.. He even ordered some till roll and intended to make a buck! He had been at work one night discussing all things ghoulish.-load of lads at a bar... The next day while we were pottering on the till printed off a load of numbers..
Unplugged... Ds has a bit more respect for the dead now! Scared us all shitless!

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/09/2023 13:30

Yes. Massive regret. Left home and bought a little flat in a brand new build development. Lots of young professionals. Had a get together one night and after a few drinks we did a board. When everyone went, I carried on and did one alone. Within a day or two loads of strange things started happening. Neighbour woke up to a black dog in his bedroom. No way for it to get in and nobody had a dog anyway. It disappeared into thin air after being chased down the hall. Another neighbour saw a tall man with a cloak on standing by his front door. Somebody else had loud banging noises that couldn't be identified and I had a screaming child. Nobody had children and it was very disturbing. We had to get somebody in to bless the block in the end. I had a crucifix in my room. I told my Dad thinking he'd say "don't be stupid" but he completely lost it with me and said "don't mess with things you know nothing about". He wouldn't be drawn further. I presume he had his own experiences. Would never ever do it again.

BusyBees1234 · 13/09/2023 12:54

Wow, my stance is that I'd never do one and these posts confirm my decision

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 13/09/2023 13:00

Ouija boards were created as a toy. They have no special 'powers'. Without getting into a debate about whether it's possible to communicate with the dead, if you believe it is, you don't need a commercially produced piece of cardboard to do it.

BirdiePlantaganet · 13/09/2023 13:13

We used to play with an Ouija board loads as teens. All great fun and lots of silly, teenage hysteria.

You know you can’t actually communicate with the dead, right?

Google the ‘ideomotor effect’ for an explanation of why the planchette seemingly moves of its own volition.

It’s harmless fun and about as ‘real’ as communication with a medium or someone reading tarot cards.

People that believe in ‘woo’ and ghosts will convince themselves these things are real when there has never once been anything proven to support this.

How do you explain @TheFormidableMrsC experiences if there is nothing to them

Do you take everything you read on the internet at 100% face value?

I know what happened. It doesn't bother me at all if I'm not believed. Of course it could all have been a weird coincidence, absolutely it could. However, it was very very real to those of us affected. I just thought it was interesting to share. Regardless of the origins of Ouija, which I know was intended to be harmless, I absolutely would not advise anybody to do it 🤷🏻‍♀️

CurlewKate · 13/09/2023 13:55

Google the ideomotor effect.

Reflect that the ouija board was invented in (I think!) the 1920s as a toy.

Think about what attention seekers some teenagers are like when you remember your classroom experience.

Funkyslippers · 13/09/2023 13:59

I'm a total non believer in stuff like this but around 25 years ago me & some friends did one. The glass started moving when we all had our fingers on it. It spelt out the name "Kid". Can't remember much else about it but I don't think any of my friends would have moved the glass on purpose. So can't really explain it

Giggorata · 13/09/2023 14:10

I wholeheartedly agree that whatever the recreational origins of the planchette or ouija boards, they are potentially troublesome these days.
People opening themselves up to whatever it is, be it the dead, other entities or their own unconscious minds, rarely end up with positive results.
And often the results are harmful, in terms of continuing phenomena, mental issues and long term fears.

The ideomotor response is interesting but doesn't explain some of the phenomena associated with ouija boards which I and others have witnessed.
These include the glass moving on its own, a book it referred to jumping out of the bookcase, the glass flying away and smashing, and more.
When I have had my finger on the glass, in a group or alone, I have felt an underlying vibration, which is very weird and very real.

The majority of Mumsnet are keen to maintain beliefs rooted only in the material world and will undoubtedly turn up in droves to say how nonsensical it all is. Each to their own and all that.

Exactly, has no-one seen The Exorcist?👻

I did draw my own Ouija board out on a bit of cardboard when I was a kid and nothing happened with it. I did wonder if that was because you needed the official one rather than making your own.

newusernamevictoria · 13/09/2023 14:28

To the people saying it's just a board game and literally a toy, of course
It is, but all the stories can't be explained away and many by people who were absolutely determined there was nothing in it. I don't think the evil is in the actual game but in the fact that you are open to inviting "spirits" in when you play it. The game is an invitation to unseen things, it's in the attitude of the players whether it works or not. I believe it's evil spirits which I know isn't a popular opinion but whatever you believe you can't deny there is something in it.

BirdiePlantaganet · 13/09/2023 14:38

I believe it's evil spirits which I know isn't a popular opinion but whatever you believe you can't deny there is something in it.

But you can, because there’s no such thing as ‘spirits’, evil or otherwise. And pushing a bit of plastic or wood around a sheet of cardboard isn’t going to invite in anything other than silliness and pranks. Think about it. You could push a monopoly house across the board and ask it questions. What’s the big difference? Has the Ouija board got special properties? It’s daft that people buy into such nonsense. And they’ll always say things like ‘a glass smashed’, ‘the lights went off’, ‘we saw an imaginary dead person’ to convince themselves there’s something more than a bit of fun.

CurlewKate · 13/09/2023 14:50

@newusernamevictoria " I believe it's evil spirits which I know isn't a popular opinion but whatever you believe you can't deny there is something in it."

I most certainly can!

newusernamevictoria · 13/09/2023 14:52

@BirdiePlantaganet that was partially my point, yes, it's metal and plastic and you could push a monopoly house around. It's not the board game in itself at all. People generally either know it's real or are skeptical and patronizing as they haven't experienced it. It's ok, I completely understand the inability to accept it unless you have experienced it. I would be the same except I have heard too many stories from people I know well, who started out from your exact viewpoint.

CurlewKate · 13/09/2023 14:56

@newusernamevictoria "People generally either know it's real or are skeptical and patronizing as they haven't experienced it. It's ok, I completely understand the inability to accept it unless you have experienced it."
You have absolutely no idea why people on here have experienced! Oh, and you know you accused other people of being patronising? Well....
