Ouija board

I'd love to hear from people that have done one, what happened?

I wouldn't ever do one but I can't get over always thinking that somebody in the group must be pushing the arrow instead of it "guiding" you

When I was about fifteen a girl in my Science class suddenly stood up and started screaming. It turned out that she'd done a ouija board a few days before and had seen something/somebody in the classroom and then freaked out

I think there's certain things you shouldn't mess with and that this is one of them. Too big a risk

My dad (who's 82) told me that Gran and her friends used to do the board, when he was a lad. He'd watch but not participate. He said the planchette would move on its own, with nobody touching it.

I'd never go near one myself, because although I've years of experience of spirit activity, including numerous instances of objects moving, I think the difference is that I didn't do anything to "invoke" it, and I've never been harmed, nor felt threatened by anything that's happened. I do know the identity of the spirit in question, and after seventeen years of activity, I feel fairly safe to say that I don't believe they mean me any harm.

I do think that people mucking around with ouija boards for a laugh, as many kids do, with no genuine or sincere intent, if they do experience anything "coming through", then they likely get what they deserve - low level entities out to cause mischief and scare people.

There may be a correct, safe way to use a board, but most people who use one don't respect that, and really should steer well clear.

What does he say when you ask how he knows that?

The best argument against these things being real is that it assumes another world full of spirits with awesome power over this one who only use it to knock things off shelves and spell out 'Lucifer' etc.

And apparently all with speech defects as they are ok at moving a glass to spell out words, but when 'mediums' ask for messages you get "I'm getting a D sound.. Derek.. David or maybe Adam?"

Are they meant to be people who died? Maybe they died old and don't have their teeth in?

They also all speak English.
which reminds me I watched a Netflix documentary recently where a group of spiritualists “summoned” the spirit of a young Welsh girl who had died at the house from the documentary. The journalist filming could speak Welsh, and asked the spiritualists (who could not) to ask the “ young girl” to send messages in Welsh.

funnily enough “she” wouldn’t.

Because he was watching it. I believe him because he's my dad, and I trust him 100%. Also, I've seen stuff move in front of my own eyes, so I know from experience that these things happen.

I did this once during the summer holiday with one friend. The answers were all over the place, strange and bloody cheeky. When we asked the name, it spelled out Loki. We thought nothing of it.

This was in the mid-nineties, before all the Marvel stuff and neither of us knew anything about it.

When we got back to school, our very first assembly started with the headteacher telling a story about Loki, the mischievous Norse god and my friend and I just turned to each other, wide-eyed and open-mouthed in absolute astonishment!

SeasonalWitch · 15/09/2023 13:29

Just to clarify - I do NOT believe I was in communication with a Norse god through the ouija board!

But it was an awesome moment as excitable teens!

borninthe80esss · 15/09/2023 13:39

Years ago I did one with a couple of mates, It spelt out a few words and then the glass shot across the room.Presumed it was my friend messing about until about a week later.
My son who was 3/4 was sat on the bottom of my stairs chatting away to himself.. I said there's no one there stop being silly, He said he was talking to a girl called Lucy who was stuck!! He was getting so angry at my suggestion that it wasn't real and said You brought her here and now she's stuck and crying.
I moved out a week later (planned before not because of the ghost girl) But I'd never do it again.

@UnctuousUnicorns "Because he was watching it. I believe him because he's my dad, and I trust him 100%."

So you're taking 70 year old hearsay as proof positive. OK.

🤷‍♀️ No point in engaging with your sort any further; you've made your attitude quite clear.

hotteabag · 15/09/2023 14:55

I did it at university, not at my flat and it did seem to be working in that it was moving to various points on the board. A guy who lived there was doing it with us but when the other male flatmate came in he got up and pretended like it was all rubbish and he was just humouring us when if anything he'd been more into it than anyone. After we finished with the board I felt really odd and started doing automatic writing but it was all gobbledygook. As far as I know nothing untoward happened after that night.

I am very open minded and I want to believe but I haven't experienced anything to make me actually believe in spirits that communicate with us through the board, I think its much more likely from the subconscious mind if anything.

hotteabag · 15/09/2023 14:58

Also just to add there is a case in court in Glasgow at the moment involving "Witchcraft" and Ouija Boards and the abuse of Children and Animals, very grim.

JudyGemstone · 15/09/2023 15:52

Gosh. Not heard about this before.

Sounds very reminiscent of the ‘satanic panic’ in the US in the 80s.

hotteabag · 15/09/2023 16:03

@JudyGemstone Yeah its a really odd story when it was first in the press people were quite sceptical but now it is in court I just don't know. There hasn't been a lot of information but the alleged crimes go right back to 2010 and the ages of the accused are as all middle aged adults. I hope it isn't true for the sake of the kids involved but who knows it wouldn't be the first time such charges were made up but then there are a lot of crazy people out there.

Edit: Just to add I know that most practicing Witches are not doing anything like this sort of thing.

Why is it always evil dead people that make contact and things go missing or people have horrible accidents?

It's never Aunt Betty who loved cats, was in the Salvation Army and wishes you only love and peace!

Because I think that those are not ghosts that comes through but some sort of bad energy entities or demons.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 16/09/2023 07:40

I’m not saying I disbelieve in ghosts or the stories here but isn’t there someone who’s said they’re offering a cash prize for proof of them?

CurlewKate, like the other non believers is absolutely certain they are right but are just arrogant to think that.

On threads about unexplained happenings they like to come along and give their biased explanations for the events. Some of them are hilarious

CurlewKate · 16/09/2023 09:03

@GonnaGetGoingReturns James Randi had a standing offer of a million dollars for anyone who could demonstrate any form of paranormal abilities under test conditions. It was unclaimed when he died. I don't know whether it's still available. The usual like was that "oh, the people with real powers aren't interested in money" or "the scientific equipment prevented the special powers from coming through." Despite the fact that the terms of the test were always agreed by the person concerned in advance.

Shock

Do they do a phonics version? 🤣

Honestly, the level of superstition in this day and age is the only disturbing element here.

Eyesopenwideawake · 16/09/2023 09:08

Last time I sat in on a session was many, many years ago. There were two of us with the same first name so when a message came for through for 'our name' saying "tell Donnie I'm OK" I presumed it was for the other woman, but she was as nonplussed as I was.

It was only several months later I was talking to my Dad about his cousin who killed herself that I realised her husband's name was Donnie...

"CurlewKate, like the other non believers is absolutely certain they are right but are just arrogant to think that."

I'm not arrogant at all. I'm completely open minded. But would you take at face value anything somebody told you they saw 70 years ago? I don't think even the most ardent believers would say there are no fakes. I mean even the most sceptical of us usually has to take a reality check when we see, for example, someone like Derren Brown! So how can we possibly take as evidence a memory of something someone saw 70 years ago when they were a child?

LastTrainEast · 16/09/2023 09:22

Don't the toy company put instructions in the box?

BirdiePlantaganet · 16/09/2023 11:40

The thing I find amusing about Ouija boards is that you’re never joined by someone nice who just wants to say hello and maybe give you the winning lottery numbers. It’s always something menacing.

I wonder if there’s a queue of disgruntled dead people waiting to hear some kids have set up a board, so they can pop in and break a glass and slam a door. 😂

It’s all very silly.

That does sound quite funny, disgruntled ghosts lining up to scare some brazen teenagers 👻

I had a slightly weird experience once as a teenager, using a homemade ouija pendulum with a friend.
Don’t remember what it was saying, but at one point my friend suddenly noticed a strange shape/ stain on her window glass.
From where we were sitting it looked like possibly condensation, and the shape was similar to the mask of the Phantom of the Opera, sort of diagonally one half of a face with one eye.
I found it quite spooky, my friend was fascinated, and her mum just came in and wiped it away with a cloth.
Still not quite sure what exactly it was.
