I used to but then I know some horrible people who just seem to do really well ant everything and some of the most genuine kind people I know have hardships time after time.

I think the concept is that you get the reward/punishment in your next life, not this one. Sadly.

Not karma exactly, but I think, over time, people generally get the luck they deserve.

Also though, a lot of "unlucky" people don't actually have that much bad luck, they're glass half empty people.

For example, I think luck has been pretty good to me overall, I've had good jobs, good friends, healthy DC. But DH and I did both lose our jobs in the same week once and I was widowed very young, which was awful luck, but hasn't coloured how lucky I feel overall iyswim.

I think these are quite nasty ideas that people get what they deserve . What would you say to your good friend who has cancer ? That they must have done something to deserve it ?
It's pretty horrible really .

Although most people describe karma as do good things and good things happen, it's my understanding that karma is more based on afterlife rewards/punishments. Since few people believe in an afterlife, most people who do believe it, seem comfortable adopting the idea to a more immediate effect within one life.

No, but that's my point one major bit of badluck (like being widowed young) doesn't mean you've had an unlucky life. There are still blessings to count, even if there are periods when they seem thin on the ground .

I do to a certain extent but I also believe in free will. I also think any challenges we get in life are there to help us learn, no matter how difficult they may be. Someone who has it easy in life won't learn the same lessons as someone who has it really tough. So whilst difficult things might be awful to go through they are character defining and developing in some ways. Not to say everyone gets through the bad stuff but I don't believe that we end with death - I believe our soul is here to learn lessons before it moves on to wherever.

Also things happen cyclically - things that go up come down and vice versa. So if you're going through a rough patch, things will eventually get easier - fact of life.

I also notice that when I do a good deed it often seems to come back tenfold! And if I feel crap or miserable everything seems worse and attracts worse luck often. So it's worth trying to do good things, even in the face of overall adversity.

I definitely believe in karma but without a feeling of guilt or blame as such owing to our previous wrongdoings.

Yes I have often pondered over this. I guess it's because as I was often told as a child that life isn't fair .
