Conversation with colleague, newly divorced guy, 50 next year. Three children, daughter 17, son 15, daughter nearly 13. The oldest girl went to a prom which would have been last summer and we were looking at some photographs of it and I remarked how grown up she looked.
He told me that before he married his wife and started a family, a previous girlfriend became pregnant and they lost the baby, a little girl, at about 20 weeks in 1999 - the stage when they knew if it was a boy or a girl. They had named her Sarah, but they broke up very shortly afterwards over the stress of the loss. He says he never mentioned this to his wife when he met her a good few years later.
He was saying that his oldest daughter had an imaginary friend called Sarah when she was growing up, and that she said she looked like Daddy but had brown curly hair (as did his ex).
